This misinformation and subsequent range of reactions from people/ organisations often cause even greater difficulties and challenges to response plans. Outbreaks are made all the more difficult when bureaucratic processes delay effective response on the ground or official communications to be relayed. During this period in a global, digital age is fertile ground for misinformation.

This is extremely important. Not just for animal health etc, but for understanding how misinformation is promulgated. I would strongly suggest that people take the time to read this from both an animal health tactical but also a general information management strategic point of view. #disinformation #worldanimalhealth #epidemic #pandemic

Misinformation is inaccurate information, usually spread without harmful intent. Disinformation is inaccurate or misleading information, deliberately created and spread to cause harm to target governments, organisations or people. If no action is taken, the consequences can be significant, threatening lives and livelihoods, undermining trust, and taking up resources. Misinformation and disinformation can spread rapidly, causing confusion and hampering emergency control and response measures. They increase the risk that human/animal and zoonotic diseases or other health threats will spread and cause economic and social damage. These guidelines (written by World Organisation for Animal Health and INTERPOL) provide a starting point for organisations working in animal health emergencies, to prepare for, detect and respond to disinformation and misinformation. Since this is a fast-moving area, and affecting all spheres in addition to #OneHealth, with much information and guidance already available, this document includes links to further resources that offer more detail on specific strategies and actions. Rehoming rats and mice used in laboratories. “They are small but the richness of their lives is equal” - a new article by Petra Stock in COSMOS Magazine. 🐁🐀 #AnimalWelfare #WelfareWednesday  https://lnkd.in/gWC_CwA3  More than 120 million mice and rats are used in experiments worldwide each year. Most of them are euthanized. But the world is changing, and many countries are developing roadmaps to move away from #animalresearch. "[U]nlikely alliances are forming in efforts to rehome these animals." "As part of a new rat rehoming initiative, the University of Auckland is teaming up with the New Zealand Anti-Vivisection Society...to find homes for 50 animals every month." -Petra Stock. “Rats are one of the main animals that get killed every year for science," -Tara Jackson. Rats bred in labs make great companion animals according to Dr. Jodi Salinsky, Animal Welfare Officer and Head Veterinarian at The University of Auckland. "She lists off their perks: “hilarious,” “easy to train,” “social,” “snuggle bunnies,” and “not prone to biting.”" In Netherlands, a similar rehoming initiative became a standard practice. Dr. Monique Janssens🌱 from UMC Utrecht argues that we have the same moral obligation to rehome mice and rats as we do for dogs or cats. “They are small but the richness of their lives is equal.” Rehoming is a better solution than euthanasia, but the at the heart of the problem is the continued breeding and use of 🐁 and 🐀 for experiments, particularly when those experiments fail to translate into meaningful benefits. I just reviewed the Shelter Animals Count most recent data report. Kristen Hassen did an incredible overview, discussing "The Mysterious Trend in Euthanasia". We have Best Friends Animal Society advocating for No-Kill 2025, yet one year away, euthanasia is 31% higher than in 2022 and has risen above euthanasia rates of 2018 and 2019. Would it not be simply amazing if the great minds and leaders in #animalwelfare #veterinaryprofession #petindustry ALL came together to figure this out? Would it not be incredible to have everyone rowing in the same direction? What if we ALL were to work together to save animals and do something about this crisis? If anyone wants to reach out and have a conversation and all come to the table, I will gladly facilitate and serve in any capacity. We do need to figure this out, but in order to do so, we must work together. Let's not just WANT to do better, let's do better.
