The interdependence of the ecosystem is evident in the symbiotic relationship between birds and deer. As birds construct nests before breeding season in summer, they benefit from the soft woolen lining obtained by aiding deer in shedding their thick fur coats. This interaction exemplifies nature's efficiency, as the discarded fur finds purpose in providing insulation for bird nests. The interwoven cycles of nest-building, shedding, and resource utilization showcase the intricate balance of ecosystems, emphasizing how every species, no matter how seemingly disparate, contributes to the sustainability and functionality of the whole, creating a harmonious web of interdependence in the intricate tapestry of nature.

Birds usually build their nests prior to breeding season, which is in summer when food is plentiful. Deer have a thick fur coat and shed them in summer as they don’t need the extra insulation in summer. The birds are in fact helping the Deer shed her winter coat. The birds get to line their nests with the soft woolen lining, Nothing is ever wasted in nature ! 🌿🌿🌿🌿

Here's one you won't see every day. We've worked hard at Wild M™ Ranch to increase the population of wild turkey, rabbits, and other desirable nesting birds including woodcock and quail; not to mention white-tailed deer. After two years of intense predator management, habitat enhancements including eradicating invasive trees and plants (i.e., bush honeysuckle, Ohio buckeye, and even some cedar), and sowing native grasses and forbs, we are seeing a positive impact. For the #wildturkey, the biggest impact is breeding. Hens seem to be nesting more in the edge cover with the reduced threat of nest raiders like raccoons, opossum, red fox, and bobcats.
We shot this video from the front porch of Wild M™ Ranch. Wild turkey hens typically mate multiple times during the breeding season to ensure fertilization and the production of a clutch of eggs. Each mating event increases the chances of successful fertilization and a larger number of eggs being laid.
