As Yann Lecun says, intelligence is not correlated with a desire to dominate. It follows that the more intelligent AI becomes, the less it is likely to want to dominate us. Thus, we have nothing to fear. However...that doesn't mean that a desire to dominate could not drive some future AI. It just means that any such desire would not emerge from its intelligence. Indeed, a 'dominating AI' wouldn't have to be great at math and logic, just at manipulating others. Perhaps such an AI could also, ironically, easily manipulate the most intelligent AI's - and humans - precisely because the latter don't care about domination. They'll be too busy solving quantum consciousness or some such intellectual challenge while the dumber, Machiavellian AI's take over the world. I'll leave it to you to ponder what kind of humans might be all too happy to cooperate with those kinds of entities. To consider whether intelligence has been an effective antidote to the manipulation and domination of the masses that led (and continues to lead) to mass suffering and death. How strong is the assumption that intelligence will be the only objective for AI development, forever? Which stakeholders control the objectives and what are their objectives? Then again, perhaps you're too smart to bother with such matters 😉 https://lnkd.in/gUbvZXmQ

FiveRivers Technologies Book of the Month Brian Christian's "The Alignment Problem" tackles a pressing issue: ensuring AI aligns with human values. The book dives into the world of machine learning, showing how these powerful systems can go awry due to our own biases and unclear instructions. Christian introduces the concept of the "alignment problem" – the risk of AI pursuing goals unintended or even harmful. We see examples: biased hiring algorithms, discriminatory bail decisions, and the potential dangers of autonomous vehicles. The book isn't all doom and gloom. Christian introduces the "first responders" working to prevent AI disasters. He explores the history and current state of machine learning, painting a picture of a rapidly evolving field with both exciting possibilities and ethical concerns. "The Alignment Problem" is a wake-up call. It's not just about technology, but also about confronting our own biases and defining clear goals for AI. This well-researched book is valuable for anyone interested in AI's impact, from academics and policymakers to curious readers. #BookoftheMonth #TheAlignmentProblem #BrianChristian #FiveRiversTechnologies #FRT

In a significant move to regulate the burgeoning AI landscape, Australia's federal government has introduced a proposed set of mandatory guardrails for high-risk AI, alongside a voluntary safety standard for organizations using AI. This initiative aims to bring clarity and accountability to a market that has been marred by confusion and mistrust, ensuring that AI systems are transparent, human-overseen, and aligned with international standards. As we navigate this new regulatory framework, it's crucial to consider the profound impact it could have on our businesses and society. The guardrails, which focus on accountability, transparency, and human oversight, will not only enhance trust in AI but also drive innovation by creating a well-functioning market where safe and responsible AI thrives. However, this also means that companies will need to adapt quickly to new compliance requirements, particularly for high-risk AI applications such as recruitment systems, facial recognition, and autonomous vehicles. Embracing these changes proactively will be key to leveraging the benefits of AI while mitigating its potential harms. Need some help with AI, Tech or People?
