Advanced Practice Provider (internal medicine, behavioral health), Assistant Professor, Advocate, Researcher.
As a Nurse Practitioner, I stand alongside my physician colleagues in advocating for quality healthcare. Contrary to the misconception that NPs seek to replace physicians, many of us believe in collaborative care that utilizes the unique strengths of each profession. Expanding to full practice authority isn't about usurping the role of physicians; it's about addressing the pressing needs of underserved communities while working within our scope of practice. By allowing NPs to practice to the full extent of their education and training, we can enhance access to care, particularly in areas where physicians may be scarce. I deeply respect the expertise of physicians and value their contributions to the healthcare system. However, I also recognize the invaluable role that NPs play in providing holistic, patient-centered care. Our training equips us with the skills to diagnose, treat, and manage a wide range of health conditions, and our focus on preventive care aligns perfectly with the goal of promoting wellness in our communities. Ultimately, this isn't a competition between professions; it's about leveraging the strengths of both NPs and physicians to ensure that every individual receives the high-quality care they deserve. Collaboration, rather than competition, is the key to addressing healthcare disparities and improving outcomes for all patients. #nursepractitioner #nursesleadwithheart #ruralcare #healthcare Pennsylvania Coalition of Nurse Practitioners

I am excited to announce that I have started my education to become a Nurse Practitioner this semester! I am extremely excited for what the future holds and cannot wait to engage in the next few years of my education. However, as NPs I believe one of our biggest obstacles as healthcare professionals is that of Full Practice Authority throughout the United States. In 1970 states began regulating NPs beyond their ARNP license. This arose with issues in regards to how adequately NPs can treat their patients due to rules and regulations. “In FPA states, NP licensure is not contingent on unnecessary contracts or relationships with a physician or oversight by the state medical board. As a result, studies show that in FPA states, NPs are more likely to practice in rural and underserved areas and have improved NP workforce recruitment, while meeting the highest care quality and safety standards. States that restrict or reduce NPs’ ability to practice by limiting licensure authority are more closely associated with geographic health care disparities, higher chronic disease burden, primary care shortages, higher costs of care and lower standing on national health rankings.” (AANP, 2024, para 3). I believe that everyone should have access to nurse practitioners' care within their community. As NPs can provide low cost and effective treatment to those who need it.
