With an inauguration by Dutch Minister Harbers of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management, alongside representatives of Rijkswaterstaat and local authorities, a milestone was recently achieved in Spijk, the Netherlands: the official opening of the overnight harbor. 🚢 A project that not only strengthens maritime infrastructure but also significantly enhances the safety of inland skippers. 🛡️ One of the notable aspects of this harbor is the integration of our high-quality fire suppression systems. 💦🔥 With two pump rooms, each equipped with a diesel-driven vertical turbine pump with a capacity of 360 m3/h per pump, a robust firewater supply is ensured. These facilities, installed at two mooring docks, provide reassuring protection for the inland skippers using the harbor. 🌊 What makes this project even more remarkable is the precise customization approach we have employed. The dimensions of the pump rooms had to perfectly fit the available space on the docks. Thanks to our expertise, these specific requirements were expertly met, seamlessly integrating the installation into the harbor infrastructure. 🏗️ #Infrastructure #Maritime #Innovation #Engineering #Firefighting

For the Federal Highway Administration, WSP’s Matthew Bilson, Hasan Raza and William Connell investigated the integration of fixed fire-fighting systems (FFFS) with emergency ventilation systems in road tunnels. Their research demonstrated FFFS can enhance ventilation performance by cooling products of combustion. This is an important conclusion as tunnel operators seek to mitigate the risk of fires in new and aging infrastructure amidst a changing fire-life safety landscape, especially with the increase in new energy carrier vehicles, such as EVs, on our highways. Enclosed space fatalities: a united industry response Leading maritime organisations gathered for the second Enclosed Space Entry – Joint Industry Workshop on 8 July 2024 at the Oil Companies International Marine Forum (OCIMF) office to discuss the ongoing challenge of reducing or eliminating deaths in enclosed spaces. Despite the ongoing incidents and fatalities in enclosed spaces, the shipping industry has not been complacent. It has responded to the challenge with a united front, with many industry, governmental and intergovernmental bodies issuing rules, regulations, and guidance. The collective efforts, such as the review of IMO guidelines on entry to enclosed spaces and the update of tshe United Kingdom’s Code of Safe Working Practices (COSWP), have been complemented by several individual industry initiatives. This collective action has led to the formation of a pan-maritime industry group and Enclosed Space Entry – Joint Industry Workshop meetings, demonstrating the industry's commitment to addressing this issue. OCIMF hosted two Enclosed Space Entry—Joint Industry Workshop meetings this year. These brought leading organisations, governmental departments, and specialists together to undertake a root-and-branch review of this challenging issue. More in-person and virtual meetings are planned for later this year and beyond. All the recent debacles with bridges, roads, airports, railway stations, air, road and rail accidents etc. With the inset of monsoons calls for a definitive revisit into the overall push for infra development. We need to definitely explore if we are diluting attention on quality beyond the tipping point. Do we need to revisit conventional principles such as durability, reliability, safety to ensure better value for the nation. While this is a need of the hour, of course, there will always be counter push justifying speed vis a vis quality. This is no political argument but a clarion call of the nation to focus on quality more than aesthetics and speed. While it may be difficult to understand the immediate why and how it may not be a bad idea to explore standards and maintenance norms to atleast complete all pending and incomplete projects before taking on newer projects year on year.
