There is no doubt now that consumers prefer products and services that are affordable, faster, and convenient; and that is the main reason why most of them prefer to use online and mobile banking products than physical branches. But does this mean that the branches are dying? Not at all. Why? Because banking is fundamentally an industry of trust and branches play an important role in creating that trust between the bank and the customers. Nonetheless, the World is changing so the branches need to adapt to the new World hence their role has to change in this digitalization era. Banks and regulators have raised concerns about the rising market power of core banking services providers. In response, providers are simplifying contract terms, unbundling services, and offering new core services to meet banks' needs. I am pleased to share the second of three articles that I co-authored with Federal Reserve colleagues about core banking system providers.
