Understanding how dressage judges take decisions and how these decisions impact equine welfare and transparency is becoming increasingly important. ✨🐴 Drawing on advanced Tobii eye-tracking technology we explored how judges at different levels of the sport allocate their attention. Some of our key findings: 🔍 Judges generally focus on the horse’s front more often and for longer than on the back end, feet, or rider. 🔍 Advanced-level judges pay comparatively more attention to the horse’s feet during trot and canter movements. 🔍 Judges at lower levels of the sport tend to focus more on the rider. While we were able to detect overarching patterns of visual search behaviour, we also saw considerable variation between individual judges. This is something we’ll investigate further in the months to come. By understanding the visual cues that inform judging processes, we aim to contribute towards enhancing judges’ observational skills and decision-making. Thanks so much to my amazing co-authors Peter Reuter, Yulia Z. and Hans Vernooij for making this happen and to all the fantastic judges for participating! 🔬Can you help support research? Researchers from the Royal Veterinary College (RVC) are calling for owners and previous owners of former racehorses in the UK to participate in a new survey and share their experiences of rehoming racehorses to uncover the different factors that influence a successful outcome. It forms part of the RVC’s wider ‘Life After Racing’ project which seeks to improve understanding of retraining and rehoming former racehorses by outlining the processes involved in rehoming and assessing the different factors that influence a former racehorse’s suitability for entry into a second career. This follows recent industry reports which call for a better comprehension of what makes a successful transition, meaning it will provide a valuable evidence base with which to inform, monitor and improve initiatives and interventions in racehorse aftercare. If you are over 18, live in the UK and own a former racehorse, or have previously owned one, you can complete the survey here 👉 https://lnkd.in/esKsAts8 It shouldn't take you more than 15 minutes to complete.

I’m noticing a powerful trend in therapy for humans and horses alike. The equine therapy industry is rapidly expanding into sessions where horses are now invited to interact and engage on their own accord. I first spotted this trend 25 years ago at the Miraval Resorts & Spas with Wyatt Webb. I was blown away at the potential this breakthrough approach would have on our industry, and am happy to see this method being more widely adopted by my peers and colleagues today. As the former director of a therapeutic riding center, I knew our horses were great physical and occupational therapists trained to help individuals with disabilities strengthen their bodies and minds. However, they were not yet seen as the natural facilitators we’ve come to know and trust them to be. Working with a horse who was free to engage with me at his own will, opened a new world full of relationships and possibilities that inspired Mindful Connections® my mindful communication and problem-solving approach that has directed my life in supporting horses worldwide. I will also never forget the PATH Intl. Conference - talking in front of a ballroom filled with hundreds of elite professionals - directors of therapeutic riding programs, instructors, and volunteer coordinators… I asked them to close their eyes and join me in experiencing the world through the eyes of therapy horses. After the talk, the audience lined up to share their vision with me. Here’s what we shared: • Horses could and should have a voice of their own. • Horses were not meant to be vehicles/tools for human benefit. • Horses, as sentient beings, need to be seen as partners and collaborators. #horsetherapy #animal #coach How can the evolution of equine therapy impact our lives for the better? What mindful practices with your horses have you established? Join me in the comments below and let's have a chat! 💬👇
