In a recent statement by UNISON, the UK's largest public service union, the critical staffing crisis within the NHS and care sectors is highlighted as a growing concern that exacerbates mental health challenges among healthcare workers. The union's survey indicates that over two-thirds of care workers have experienced a decline in their mental health, attributing their work as a significant factor. This is compounded by severe staff shortages, low pay, and the pressure of compulsory vaccine rules, which threaten to push the care sector to the brink. UNISON calls for immediate government action to address these issues and improve support for the well-being of care workers. Moreover, UNISON is pressing for an urgent and substantial pay rise for NHS staff, arguing that without such measures, the NHS will continue to suffer from high attrition rates, impacting patient care. They emphasize the necessity of a retention package that addresses the pay and ensures adequate staffing levels to handle the post-COVID-19 recovery. The plea includes a call for the earnings of the lowest-paid workers to be boosted above real living wage rates and for a cap on excessive working hours to prevent burnout. Echoing these concerns, UNISON underscores the importance of addressing the pay crisis as a means to solve staffing shortages and reduce NHS waiting lists. An immediate pay negotiation is proposed as a solution to attract and retain staff, thereby improving patient care and reducing backlogs. Lastly, UNISON is advocating for a stronger government commitment to mental health within the NHS, including better support and training for mental health workers, and action to tackle the stigma associated with mental health issues. They stress the need for a positive approach to mental health, not only for the benefit of those experiencing mental health issues but also for the workforce that supports them. Understanding these dynamics is crucial for businesses and professionals, not only for those directly involved in healthcare but also for those interested in the broader implications of public health policy and workforce management. The situation underscores the interconnectedness of healthcare delivery, employee well-being, and the critical need for robust support systems and fair compensation practices in the public sector. #MentalHealth #MentalHealthMatters #MentalHealthAwareness

I attended the Australia Health & Care Sector Skills Symposium today in Melbourne run by the Independent Tertiary Education Council Australia. No doubt the skills challenge facing the Aged Care & NDIS industries is very real. I've had the pleasure to support a number of NDIS providers in the preceding months, specifically helping them retain and boost the productivity of their Allied Health Professionals workforce. I recently wrote-up a BLOG detailing the strategies we developed together to stave off burn-out, retain great people and control labour costs to maximise profitability. If you're a NDIS provider employing Allied Health staff, you'll find this article very relevant & interesting. But you'll draw parallels about how similar strategies could be implemented even if you're not in NDIS. Hope it can add value! #ndisprovider #ndis #alliedhealth #leadership https://lnkd.in/ggnn6sCk

Providing support and guidance within the Allied Health industry while connecting you with reputable providers. Drop me a message to hear about our tailored services to meet your needs
A conversation which regularly occurs with candidates I speak to is the impact of unachievable KPIs or billable hours. While KPIs are crucial for growth and service delivery, the impact of unrealistic targets have a severe impact on staff burnout and present as a leading factor for staff turnover with the median tenure in Australia being 1.6 years. As a recruiter within the Allied Health market, I am noticing the impact this is having on staff morale and retention in the industry. High expectations along with staff shortages and lack of resources are having major impact on the industry. Let’s prioritize achievable KPIs that support professional growth and sustainable service delivery, ensuring the well-being of our NDIS workforce. I would love to hear from organisations and managers and your strategies to manage achievable KPIs along with organisational growth and service delivery. #alliedhealth #NDIS #KPIs #sustainabletargets #employeeretention

The National Nurses United (NNU) recently conducted a survey that unveiled a bleak truth about workplace violence among healthcare workers… • A staggering 81.6% of nurses surveyed reported experiencing workplace violence in 2023, with 3 in 10 disclosing physical harm. • Compared to other industries, healthcare workers are five times more likely to experience violence.
