As we approach the end of 2023, I am reflecting on the work that motivates me as an educator and identifying what intentions I want to set in another calendar year. With Civics Days happening in Oklahoma, New York and California, I couldn't be more inspired by the change our young people are working to lead in these communities. We offer Generation Citizen #educators ongoing support so students can receive an action civics education. GC educated over 30,000 students and trained over 450 teachers who collectively led over 1200 #ActionCivics projects throughout the school year. And 88% of teachers reported that participating in GC positively impacted their belief that there’s value in sharing power with students. Let me share the deeper meaning behind each word: 🔍 Empowering Minds: This phrase encapsulates the essence of youth—our ability to learn, adapt, and grow. It’s about nurturing our minds, seeking knowledge, and embracing lifelong learning. As young individuals, we hold immense potential to create positive change. 🔍 Igniting Change: Change begins with a spark—a small idea, a bold vision, or a passionate belief. Our youth have the power to ignite transformation in society, whether through innovation, advocacy, or community service. Any science nerds in my network? 🤓 Science has long been my favorite subject, but is STEM education enough to save the world? Really excited to share some early results of my research, evaluating trubel&co as a site for integrating innovation coursework and liberatory design, to ensure future scientists understand how their work intersects with society. Addressing the Dream Gap requires a multifaceted approach. This includes changing societal narratives, providing girls with diverse role models, creating inclusive educational environments, and encouraging young girls to explore all interests, especially in male-dominated fields. When girls are empowered to dream without limits, they can break through the barriers of the Dream Gap and achieve their full potential.

Today, on Youth Day, we honor the energy, creativity, and ambition of the next generation. Yet, I can't help but find myself constantly thinking about the elders, who too often find themselves in the shadows of these celebrations. Yes, we live in a world that moves rapidly, driven by the tireless energy of youth. However, in our rush to keep up with the new, are we leaving behind those who built the foundations we rely on? With their decades of experience and untold stories, they are the guardians of wisdom that can guide us on paths we have yet to explore. Imagine a day where youthful energy blends with ancient knowledge, and dreams for the future are stoked by tales from the past. We need to make an effort to provide environments where our elders feel seen, heard, and valued, not just as observers of change but as active participants in it. Every voice and hand that has shaped the present must be honored in the future we create. Let's turn Youth Day into an event that celebrates intergenerational harmony, where the past and present coexist, and nobody is left behind, especially not our elders.

For the past 25 years, I've had the privilege of engaging with diverse youth from various backgrounds and geographies, contributing to shaping their lives and impacting their families and our nation's success. To all the young minds out there, my piece of advice is simple - strive to be a better version of yourself every day. Consistently challenge your limits, push yourselves to new heights, and embrace the journey of self-actualization. In my opinion, the key to navigating life successfully lies in a powerful mantra - "Self-Control". It's the cornerstone that empowers you to manage your life effectively and make meaningful decisions. As we commemorate National Youth Day, let's collectively focus on fostering a culture of continuous learning and personal growth. Your dedication to education and self-control will not only shape your destiny but also contribute to building a brighter tomorrow for generations to come. Happy National Youth Day!
