Organizational Development (OD) is all about creating safe spaces for experimentation, encouraging risk-taking, and learning from each and every outcome. Today, I had the privilege of attending a USDA event where exciting new funding announcements were made. This $90-million in funding will support agricultural operations nationwide, fostering innovation through new and diverse practices. The outcome of these initiatives is uncertain—some may succeed, others may not - and that's OK. As one of the speakers said today, "Step in. Even if you're not sure what the outcome will be." As an OD and Change Professional I realized that the funding provided by USDA paves the way for transformative change in ag by giving members of the farming community the resources and space needed to try new approaches that will hopefully make their operations more profitable, more sustainable, and more diverse. This kind of approach is crucial not only for ag operations but for any organization striving for sustainable growth and innovation. Kudos to the authors of this publication. This really got me thinking about the concept of “dead ideas walking among us” that drive decision making and distract from meaningful action. Yesterday Ben Law - The Financial Bloke and I had a great conversation about what we see in our daily intersections with family farm businesses. Without realising it at the time, a big theme of our chat was zombie farm management philosophy. The persistence of myths like price is more important than production and scale matters most and farmers must work 365 days of the year are zombie ideas that plague the industry and restrict profit.
