AI continues to be a hot topic in biotech, but let’s not forget the challenges that come with advanced technology. AI is not a magic cure, but a powerful tool that, combined with human expertise, can lead to significant advancements in treating diseases. The real magic happens when we blend AI's analytical capabilities with the insights of scientists to tackle untreatable diseases more effectively. AI has tremendous potential to accelerate drug discovery and development by identifying disease targets, designing new therapies and improving clinical trial success and efficiency. However, the industry may have a way to go before AI will unlock a cure for cancer or Alzheimer’s. As the article below states, “Because ChatGPT can write a poem based on a simple prompt does not mean generative AI as a technology can leverage the increasing supply of genetic information to unravel disease.” As we are learning, even if AI can improve the slow, deliberate, and uncertain R&D process, successes will still come in fits-and-starts. AI must be built on a solid foundation, and innovation starts with the fundamentals. To have strong algorithms you have to have strong data, and a lot of the companies that invested in AI early on are realizing the limitations of their own data. #generativeAI

As scientists we have our own biases towards what's trending in #drugdiscovery. I am not sure the #privateequity #VC community always agrees. I am delighted that Jernej Godec, Jenna Hebert, James Kasuboski, Jasmina Marjanovic and Swetha Murali are joining us at #BostonDOT24 to share their thoughts on -Key drivers of innovation in drug discovery -Improvements in translating discoveries from the lab to the clinic -Impact of emerging areas like AI/machine learning, targeted degraders and molecular glues -Perspectives on current challenges and opportunities Why wait until then to get talking?! https://lnkd.in/e3ED9js2

The next drug you take may be designed by AI. The current drug discovery process has a failure rate of about 90%. That is quite an impressive number. How can we apply AI to bring that number down? New AI models like AlphaFold 3 which can predict the structure and interactions of all of life’s molecules may be a fast step forward, still they need to prove their efficacy in the real world, which is often much more complex than simplified environments anticipated for predictions. #ai #drugdiscovery
