Today is DTU Startup Day and I look forward to speak about how we build deep tech champions in Europe. I will be joined by investors Anna Lundin from Norrsken VC and Tommy Ahlers from Look Up Ventures. The three of us come with different backgrounds as well as different perspectives on science based innovation, but I expect us all to be bullish on the potential of deep tech! In our panel talk we will wrap our heads around the journey from lab to market, including how we bridge the gap from university spin-out to the venture journey. All in all, some perspectives on how we build ecosystems fostering bigger, better, and stronger deep tech champions in Europe. With DTU being Danish champion in converting research into innovation - as previously found in an innovation analysis - expectations are high for the event overall, and in particular the +60 participating early-stage companies. What a BeReal moment! Thank you, Peter Balogh, for inviting us to the portfolio party! It was great being at your place, participating, taking a break, partying together, meeting inspiring founders, and shaping this community together! It might seem unusual to figure out which role we're playing here. After all, Endre Varga and Laszlo Kesmarki are also founders of the DicomLab story, which STRT is an investor in, so we're part of the portfolio. At the same time, as White Unicorn, we are reviewing several startups together with Petya's team, especially in the medtech sector where we’re increasingly cooperating on various projects. Both WU and STRT have incubator programs, so in a way, we compete, but we’re much more about co-operating. We believe that in the long run, it's better to think together, build the next generation together, and jointly develop the entire innovation industry, so that everyone can enjoy the results. And it's not just talk—we actually do this in our daily work. Surprising, unconventional, strange? Maybe, but not for us. This is how we operate, and it’s worked pretty well so far! :)

Last week our team hosted industry professionals and thought leaders from MedTech businesses, start-ups, and the public sector at The National Robotarium. Our Managing Director of Health EMEA, Jürgen Pronebner, opened the discussion with an overview of the journey from concept and product development to adoption and growth. The conversation shed light on several key insights: - Scaling Medtech startups remains challenging, requiring specialised teams for growth, cultural adaptability, and readiness for tough investor scrutiny. - Startups must focus on compliance, regulatory readiness, and tailored solutions, supported by audit tools to ensure scalability and attract funding. - There is a persistent need to address systemic inefficiencies and focus on solutions that meet real, practical requirements, even if they are not the latest technological innovations. This lively discussion was followed by a tour of the Robotarium’s facilities and testing spaces, led by Steve Maclaren (COO) and Stewart Miller (CEO). Reflecting on my stage talk at DTU Startup Day 2024. Together with Anna Lundin from Norrsken VC and Tommy Ahlers from Look Up Ventures we illuminated the path of building tech champions in Europe. Our key messages were: - Deep tech is a big answer, if not THE answer, to the problems defining our societies (locally and globally), and - Deep tech has its own development journey, hence knowing the uniqe deep tech metrics and inflection points are essential   We also discussed the need for deep tech founders to move beyond technology to convey founder conviction... ...and this was almost a perfect segway from Troels Schönfeldt, Connie Hedegaard and Jes Broeng’s passionate debate on encouraging researchers to spin their groundbreaking ideas into society and tackle societal challenges. At the end of March, RESI South 2024 will convene in Atlanta and is expected to bring together more than 500 bioscience and medtech entrepreneurs with premier investors, family offices, and key executives. The event, the result of a partnership between Life Science Nation and the Southeast Life Sciences, will highlight the innovative start-ups in the Southeastern region and connect them with early-stage investors. We spoke to Georgia Bio CEO Maria Thacker and NC Life Sciences Organization President Laura Gunter, about the growth of biotech in the southeast region, the upcoming RESI South 2024 conference, and how it expected to help fill a gap in access to capital for companies in the region. https://lnkd.in/gwyN_Nx4

Every patient wants to be heard, to have full attention of a doctor and to dive deep together into his or hers concerns. Instead, clinicians very often have to compromise and spend precious patient time on administration. Miltiadis Triantafyllou is an inspirational example of a doctor-turned-entrepreneur who has taken solving inefficiencies in clinical processes into his own hands. He is a cardiologist in Sweden, but besides that, he is running an AI-based startup XSilico Ai that automatically annotates raw text of medical records with structured clinical codes, automatically summarizes complex journal notes, extracts vital information, and even crafts comprehensive discharge summaries. XSilico Ai's purpose is to minimize clinicians’ time on screen, reduce errors, and enable clinicians to spend more time with patients. It is a great case how the innovation comes from burning needs! 🌟 Stockholm has made it to the top 25 list of cities worldwide in the field of Science and Technology. A recent report conducted by GILL 2023 that compared Science and Technology (S&T) cities' intensity per capita ranked Stockholm in the 15th position. Karolinska Institute, the top applicant on this ranking, drives medical and biotechnological innovation boundaries. Likewise, Stockholm is in the Top 3 cities by number of seed deals in the E.U. Also, 965 jobs were created in the year by startups like the health tech venture Neko Health, which specializes in radar, laser, 3D, and thermal imagery, and dema.ai, which is building real-time analytics tools—clear indicators of Stockholm's growing startup ecosystem. 🚀 Stockholm shows essential strengths in the European startup scene.
