Agri-Environmental Protection Conference in Dali With about 300 other colleagues I had the pleasure to attend this Conference organized by the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Science. Here with Lili Wang from AEPI Tianjin and Jan Bogaert from Liège University. In Europe I sometimes feel that I have to justify cooperation with Chinese scientists. But they address the same issues as we do: #soil #fertility, #fertilizer efficiency, #water #quality, #biodiversity, #pesticide effects on non-target organisms, #food #waste, #GHG reduction, #climate #adaptation, … They are passionate about their work and they sometimes have different approaches. It’s in everyone’s interest that scientists team up to help finding solutions to those global challenges.

#grrf #sundayspecial Global Records & Reference Organization 12 May: The International Day of Plant Health (IDPH) IDPH is observed on 12 May to raise awareness about the necessity of protecting plant health in order to prevent hunger, reduce poverty, safeguard biodiversity, and promote economic development. Plants make up to 80 percent of the food we consume and 98 percent of the oxygen we breathe, yet they are severely affected by pests and diseases. According to the FAO, up to 40 percent of food crops are destroyed by plant pests and diseases every year, which not only has a detrimental impact on agriculture but also exacerbates global hunger, threatens rural livelihoods, and costs the global economy up to $220 billion annually. Invasive insects, which can spread diseases, pose an additional threat to plant health and biodiversity. The International Plant Health Day provides an opportunity to raise awareness about the critical role that plant health plays in human health and the environment. Happy International Day of Plant Health!! #grrf #plants #flaura #forest #ecology #environment #plantshealth #idph

🌾🌳On this day, May 12, the #UnitedNations established the International Day of Plant Health. The #IDPH aims to raise global awareness about how protecting plant health can contribute to ending hunger, reducing poverty, protecting #biodiversity, and boosting economic development. ✅This day highlights the value that healthy plants have in reaching the UN's Sustainable Development Goals. The majority of human food comes from our plants, which play a significant role in #ecosystems and are fundamental to agriculture. So, to ensure food security and sustainable agriculture, it is imperative to promote plant health as challenges from diseases, pests, and #climatechange increase. 💡It is inspiring to see how governments, organizations, and researchers often collaborate on this day to promote practices and policies that improve plant health through educational campaigns and joint events and activities. These initiatives seek to preserve natural resources, prevent the spread of invasive pests, and make food systems more resilient against environmental influences. 🖌To brush up your knowledge on the topic, the FAO of the UN has selected titles highlighting the importance of the day.🙏🏼 ⏩https://lnkd.in/dRtSxpTt

Here are just a few reasons why #SoilHealth matters: 🫰 Soil degradation costs the EU at least 97 billion euros/year 😋 Healthy soils are the foundation for 95% of the food we eat 🤒 Soil health is directly linked to human health Healthy soils are essential for life, and yet in the EU between 60-70% of them are in poor health ⚠🤯 That is why farmers, scientists, businesses and civil society have all called for a strong EU law on soils to protect them from further harm❗ Read our briefing to discover our priorities and recommendations for soils in the coming months and years 👉 https://lnkd.in/eCzFwAKs #Soil #Nature #Food #Agroecology #HumanHealth #WaterProtection #OneHealth

Day 1 of the Soilborne Plantd Diseases Symposium is done and dusted. We have had presentations from industry players (ARC, Agri Technovation, Sporotec and NEMLAB). This was followed by a general discussion, yeah, conversations on soil health and what to measure for what purpose are still complicated. What I got is soil health can be determined by microbial diversity, and the functionality of these microbes. My questions are which microbes should be looking for and what functionality should they have? And if they don’t have it, are the quick seasonal measures to get these communities thriving? Soil scientists help me out on this please. What information do we give our farmers? Too many questions. #AgriculturalResearch #SoilHealth #SoilDiseases #Production #Grains

📰CGIAR #IntheNews According to Al Jazeera English, a study warns that climate change may significantly increase snakebite incidents in South Asia. The region, battling a high toll from snakebites, faces new challenges as venomous snakes could come into closer contact with humans due to environmental changes. The International Rice Research Institute underscores the critical role of snakes in agriculture, highlighting their importance in controlling rodent populations that threaten crops. This balance is crucial for sustaining ecosystems and agriculture. More: https://lnkd.in/diC4T_Kd #ClimateChange #EcoSystem
