Did you know that 75% of the land in Northern Ireland is used for agricultural purposes? Locally in Ballymena, agriculture and farming are engrained into the fabric of the area. In 2023, The Gallaher Trust committed £65,000 of funding towards the Ulster Farmers Union to help support Ballymena’s rural economy and encourage young people into or stay in this sector. The funds awarded support two students per year in a foundation degree at CAFRE (College of Agriculture and Rural Enterprise). To date, the funding has been used to support two students which supports them with costs such as technology and course fees. Pictured below are Owen Birt and Megan Law, recipients of the scholarship; alongside Professor Roy Douglas, Trustee of The Gallaher Trust; and Derek Lough, UFU Membership Director. Our Research and Innovation Grants are dedicated to projects benefiting Scotland’s native woodlands or enhancing understanding of their value. SCOTLAND: The Big Picture's Painting Scotland Yellow Project does just that. In their next phase, they’re creating a film to dispel myths and will be hosting a specialist event for the tree-growing industry, aiming to: 🌳 Reverse the decline of Aspen, a vital component of Scotland’s native woodlands. 🌳 Foster collaboration between growers and aspen experts to address production challenges. 🌳 Raise awareness of aspen’s importance, promoting natural regeneration of existing strands. We’re proud to co-fund this important next step in their project. Emma Razi - Head of Fundraising, SBP, said: "We are extremely grateful to Future Woodlands Scotland. The grant will fund awareness raising activities and collaboration, helping to increase public understanding of the role of aspen as an important contributor to increased biodiversity and climate mitigation." 🏴 Discover more about our Research and Innovation Grants. 👉 https://ow.ly/K1zm50RmhzT #PaintingScotlandYellow #ResearchGrants #InnovationGrants Image: SCOTLAND: The Big Picture

This afternoon, two days of deliberations on our 2024-2034 Long Term Plan wrapped up, with key decisions on what we’re going to do, and how much we’re going to spend, over the next 10 years. Here’s what councillors decided: 🔹 We’re going to invest more in biodiversity, increasing the per property rate to $15 per annum. 🔹 A region-wide public transport rate will start from 2025/26, with the coming months to be spent developing a rating model that we’ll seek community feedback on next year. 🔹 The Regional Development Fund will be discontinued. We’re going ahead with a new rural compliance and support rate, that has a mix of targeted and general rate funding. 🔹 It’s good news for fans of Te Huia. Reserve funds will be used to cover the subsidy shortfall to enable the service to complete its five year trial. Councillors also voted in favour of making a submission on a central government bill that is seeking to reinstate polls on Māori wards and constituencies. Our submission outlines our concerns about the bill and makes some recommendations regarding the proposed changes.
