Advanced Practice Nurse | Owner Kinsella Legal Nurse Consulting, LLC | 10+ years of nursing experience | Urgent Care | Correctional Health | Neuro | Med-Surg | PACU
What is the right level of care for your symptoms? 🤒 😷 I have been an Advanced Practice Nurse in an Urgent Care for the past 2 years, and to this day, I am still alarmed by the number of people that do not know where to go to receive appropriate care for their situation. A lot of patients don't like being told they need an evaluation in the Emergency Department for several reasons, including: insurance co-pay is much higher 💲 , they'll be there for hours, or they've previously had a bad experience there. We also have a lot of people say, "Urgent Care and ED are essentially the same thing, so why does it matter where I go?" First, and foremost, NO they are not "essentially the same." Why does it matter? Depending on the situation, coming to Urgent Care first instead of the Emergency Department can mean the difference between life and death. For example: Just a few weeks ago, a man in his 60s presented to our Urgent Care clinic with complaint of acute onset of blurry vision, feeling like he couldn't get his words out, and unsteady gait. 🚨 🚨 🚨 To anyone who has ever worked in the medical field, this is when those little hairs on your arms stand up and red flags start flying in your brain. Normally, our policy is that if someone presents with any symptoms that could potentially warrant higher level of care, a Registered Nurse brings them to our triage room to obtain vitals and more information about their symptoms. From there we can determine whether their situation is one that can be handled in Urgent Care. However, in this particular situation, it only took one look and 2 questions from me to realize that it was best to skip triage, and just take him straight to the Emergency Department. Fortunately, our clinic happens to be attached to the hospital 🏥 , so it's as simple as a Registered Nurse helping the patient into a wheelchair and getting them downstairs while I call the Emergency Department to let them know what I'm sending their way. Not even 5 minutes later, the call came overhead for a "Stroke Alert" to let all the appropriate departments (Radiology - CT, Pharmacist, etc.) within the hospital know that they now had a patient that was going to take top priority. In that gentleman's situation, TIME=BRAIN 🧠 . That's why it matters that patients should understand where to go for their symptoms. Delaying care by even a matter of hours or minutes CAN make a difference in the overall outcome. In just the past 2 years, I have had 2 active heart attacks walk into our clinic, 2 strokes, 2 bowel obstructions, 1 GI bleed, multiple head injuries, and at least 5 cases of appendicitis that I can recall off the top of my head. Unfortunately, I'm not able to work those up with limited resources in Urgent Care, let alone treat them. If you are ever unsure of where to go for your symptoms, contact your Primary Care office to speak with a nurse that can help guide you to the correct place. 📽 cred: www.osfhealthcare.org

Insurance plans and coverage can be tricky! Here are some frequently asked questions: ❓ I went for a cleaning as an adult and was covered completely but had a balance when my child came to Children's Dental World - why is this? 🅰️ Your child saw a Pediatric Specialist! Our dentists studied for years to specialize in this field and as a result, follow a different fee guide than the general dentist. Some insurance plans cover these fees diferently - please check with your insurance provider if you have questions about coverage. ❓ How often should we come in for a cleaning and check up? 🅰️ Our dentists generally recommend every six months depending on patient's needs, however insurance policies differ in coverage. As we have no way of knowing your coverage, check with your insurance before you book your appointment to ensure your claim will be covered. #ChildrensDentalWorldWinnipeg #DentalInsurance #PediatricDentists
