Ever stopped to wonder why we treat dental health as a separate entity from our overall medical care? 🤔 .It's a bit of a head-scratcher, right? But here's the scoop: Historically, dentists and doctors have operated in their little bubbles, doing their own thing. But guess what? Our mouths are way more connected to the rest of our bodies than we realize! 🦷💥. This article breaks it down for us: dental issues like gum disease aren't just about toothaches; they can mess with our hearts, our diabetes management, and even our joints! 😱. But here's the kicker: even though dentists and doctors know this, they're often not on the same page. Separate training, separate insurance, separate everything. It's like our mouths and our bodies are living in different universes! 🌌 #MouthBodyConnection #DentalVsMedical #BreakDownBarriers #HealthcareTalks

The piece looks into the connections between oral and overall health, and whether healthcare leaders are ready to improve their patients’ health by incorporating dental care into primary care.

Healthcare Innovator and coFounder and General Partner of Boutique Venture Partners Founder of GengyveUSA, Professor at UCSF
GengyveUSA agrees with this. In fact, I believe it's time that Dentistry be considered a specialty under Medicine. There, I said it! The mouth is connected to the whole body, always has been and always will be. Dentistry should be a specialty just like ophthalmology, otolaryngology, urology, endocrinology etc, etc. Each speciality knows and does things specific to them, just like Dentistry. We (Dentists) know and do things specific to our knowledge and training. Why should it not be all the same? I remember 20 years ago in the middle of my Medical School training how shocking it was that the mouth actually had something to do with the rest of the body. The sad thing is, 20 years have gone by and everyone is as equally shocked. Why? That requires a multilayered answer on another form, but big picture, if Dentistry was a part of Medicine, just like all of the other specialties are, then maybe the importance of the mouth on systemic health would not be such a recurring revelation to everyone. Anyway, try some of our mouthwash, it's the best dam stuff you can buy. I stake at least one of my three doctoral degrees on it. The local improvements you get in better oral health will be reflected in your overall better systemic health. If you’re still offering only unilateral night splints, it’s time to rethink your approach. In my practice, switching to bilateral night splints has been a game changer. Patients appreciate the option to treat both sides simultaneously, and it’s led to a noticeable increase in compliance. Why does it work? Simple: Comfort and convenience. Patients who struggle to alternate between sides find it easier to commit to wearing bilateral splints. This means they’re more likely to stick to their treatment plan, leading to better outcomes. By offering both options, you give your patients the flexibility to choose what works best for them. The result? Happier patients and improved recovery rates. Curious to learn more?
