Labour rights are human rights - a safe and healthy working environment is a fundamental right for all the workers, regardless of where you work. At the 110th Session of the International Labour Conference in 2022, the International Labour Organization constituents concurred to amend the Declaration on Fundamental Principles and Rights at Work, to include Occupational Safety and Health (#OSH). Other Fundamental Principles and Rights at Work include freedom of association, elimination of forced labour, abolition of child labour, and elimination of discrimination. These are universal principles, and we will continue our advocacy and capacity building in #Syria to protect workers. https://lnkd.in/ga2c8VXJ

The third and final cohort of law enforcement officers from Balochistan underwent training in Gwadar on May 28-29. Through a series of three trainings, the International Labour Organization (ILO) completed a training programme for 79 officers from the Department of Labour, Federal Investigation Agency, Police, and Mines Departments. This capacity building programme equipped them with essential knowledge and skills to tackle forced laboru, bonded labour, and human trafficking. The training, organized under the project "From Protocol to Practice: A Bridge to Global Action on Forced Labour” (BRIDGE), is a collaborative effort between the ILO and the United States Department of Labour. The BRIDGE Project aims to combat forced labor globally by raising awareness and encouraging the ratification of ILO Protocol of 2014 to the Forced Labour Convention, 1930 (P029), focusing on improving national policies, conducting research, strengthening employers’ and workers’ organizations, and providing support to victims of forced labor. In Pakistan, the BRIDGE project has prioritized strengthening the capacity of law enforcement agencies in Balochistan. This initiative, which concluded in Gwadar, began with a comprehensive training needs assessment of these agencies, leading to the development of a specialized training manual tailored to the region's specific needs.

I had the chance to participate in Disciplinary and Grievance Handling Procedures As per Tanzanian Labour Laws Training which was organized by The Open University of Tanzania, Directorate of Consultancy Services (ODC). Topics Covered were: 1. Concepts of disciplinary handling procedures. 2. Steps of Disciplinary Procedure. 3. Disciplinary hearing proceedings including the appeals 4. Purpose and benefits of grievance procedures 5. Steps of grievance procedures. It was a very enlightening training, especially for HR professionals.

InShaAllah going to facilitate a day long Training session on “Disciplinary Action and Domestic Inquiry” (as per Bangladesh Labour Law-2006 and Labour Rules-2015)” on 19th January 2024 (Friday) at Bangladesh Japan Training Institute (BJTI). How Participants will be benefited: 1. Participants will learn Misconduct & Disciplinary action for managing human resources/workforce. 2. Develop the skill on grievance handling tools and techniques. 3. Will able to judge when need preliminary Inquiry and when go direct formal Inquiry. 4. Will able to conduct Domestic Inquiry properly. 5. Develop the skill to handle disciplinary cases and employee grievances. Identify the best practices of Domestic Inquiry. 6. Proper justice at workplace will be ensured and Misconduct will be reduced 7. Will able to maintain good industrial relations maintaining liaison with Trade Union/CBA. 8. Management will be able to take right decision

To realize #OSH number of Labour Inspectors must be increased.

Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) as Fundamental Labour Standard needs labour inspectors. Their numbers are declining. Since 2022 OSH has been added to the Fundamental Labour Standards. ILO Conventions 155 & 187 are now amongst the 10 Fundamental Conventions. Those OSH Conventions need many more ratifications. But to realize OSH you also need a well working labour inspectorate. There is a lot to do there as well, as the Report below shows. The numbers of inspectors is getting smaller and occupational incidents are on the rise. After my segment today at Yarona FM, I received an influx of messages regarding my presentation which was on Botswana labour laws. Its sad to see the reality that companies to this day, still do not follow Best practices of following procedures when dealing with employee issues. Half of the stories you hear are because someone decided to use either their emotions or cut corners and that puts our companies at the risk of finding themselves at the Industrial Court. A company without procedures is like a person walking in the dark and expecting to see a destination you have no sight of. Let us align our processes and procedures with; Employment Act Trade disputes Act Labour Laws codes of good practice All these are available at the Government printers. NB; Train your managers and inform them of these procedures.
