Congratulations, Bryce! "Networking increases your surface area for luck" is my new favorite :) Advocacy-building via networking is free for literally everyone, but how to do it is not obvious to most people. It can be learned with a brief amount of training, but sadly that training remains largely self-directed. I'm so glad you found 2-Hour Job Search to be a suitable textbook for learning this lifelong skill!

Last week was my 1-year anniversary at Milliman. How did I get this very non-traditional job as a pharmacist? --- Milliman is an actuarial consulting firm. They have divisions focused on healthcare. These kinds of jobs are not what they talk about in pharmacy school. There are lots of these niche areas that can benefit from a #pharmacist, so how did I find it? In short, the answer was luck, but let me lay out the repeatable steps so you can make your own luck. --- The foundation was what I learned from "The 2-Hour Job Search" by Steve Dalton: 1. Reach out to people I have weak ties with in areas I find interesting 2. Set up informational interviews to learn about their journey and market trends--NOT asking for a job 3. Follow up with most of those people routinely Through just these steps above, I was able to get a fellowship in population health management to kickoff my non-traditional pharmacy career, and then find leads/projects as an independent consultant a few years later. --- The next important step was providing value without asking for (or expecting) anything in return. The tangible examples in my case were answering #pharmacy or general healthcare questions in the Health Tech Nerds slack group, and posting content on LinkedIn every weekday. That value builds up good will in the community/audience, which sometimes returns as #opportunities=luck. The more value you provide to more people, the larger that surface area for luck becomes. Plus you personally get better through the process of doing the work to routinely provide that value. --- One of those people that noticed me happened to be a principal at Milliman that saw the potential for what a pharmacist could contribute to their firm. Your specific results will be different, but follow this strategy long enough and luck is guaranteed to find you.

LinkedIn Top Voice Healthcare Management '24 | Revenue Cycle Consultant and Trainer | Strategic Board Advisor | Award Winning AI Consultant and Trainer | Guru in Clinical Documentation, Denials and Appeals
This story made for a great discussion recently so I thought I would share. At 27, I transitioned from FT coding to a Medical Staff Coordinator at a small facility; about 140 beds, marking the beginning of an incredible ride. Back then, my job was like a puzzle, full of challenges and opportunities. I served as the crucial link between departments, hospital leadership, medical staff, department chiefs, and the physician executive board chair. Little did I know that the trust they placed in me would become a cornerstone of my career. My daily tasks involved physician meetings, credentialing, privileging, and building strong relationships. The CEO liked that I was good at analyzing industry trends, dealing with data, and forecasting early on as I have done for many since that time. I call it seeing the future. But it wasn't all smooth sailing. I quickly learned the art of not taking things personally, especially during heated board meetings or when addressing concerns from passionate physicians. My role also entailed tasks like ensuring safety, compliance, and evaluating risk. Remember, I did say small hospital. As I look back, I'm grateful for every twist and turn in that journey. Those early experiences were the building blocks of my professional growth. It wasn't about climbing the career ladder; it was about embracing challenges and turning them into opportunities to learn and improve. My next challenge came when a colleague called me to start a Health Information Technology program and I interviewed and accepted. Recently, I had the privilege of sharing these experiences with a group of remarkable students. I spoke about how this role transformed me into the leader I am today and offered them guidance on navigating their own career paths. I continue to draw upon these experiences to better myself and support others as they embark on their career journeys. Reflecting on my path from a Medical Staff Coordinator to where I am today, I'm filled with gratitude for the lessons, the ups and downs, and the continuous growth. It serves as a reminder that our careers are ever evolving, and it's the challenges that mold us into the professionals we become. Here's to the journey, the growth, and the unwavering commitment to becoming the best version of ourselves. #ProfessionalGrowth #Leadership #CareerJourney #LifeLessons #upskillzyourlife

2. 🧵 Firstly, as the Clinical Operations lead, I was in charge of ensuring that the day-to-day operations from the clinical side ran smoothly. Efficient providers such as Emeka Ogbodo, Fabian Igbaji MPH and Alimot Hassan had the essential tools, resources and updates to ensure they could carry out their teletherapy practice at industry standards and with best practices. My tasks also included ensuring their licenses and credentials were up-to-date before they could care for users and preparing their payment reports using #Retool at the end of each month, being the connective link between the clinical end, the product development team, and the clients to ensure a seamless flow of information and resources between all parties involved etc. I'm primarily proud of this part of this Role for the following: 1. To significantly reduce the wait time and no-shows from the client and user's perspective, the Cancellation and Rescheduling Policy was developed and implemented alongside the amiable Product Team; thanks, Emma Unuode, for collaborating with me on this. 2. I got to flex my #communityengagement skills during the monthly virtual clinical meet-ups. These meet-ups provided avenues for regular mixers, knowledge-sharing sessions, and more. My learnings from this? 1. People are difficult to manage, and you must be patient when working with professionals who work strictly with time. 2. Thanks to my providers, I understand #clinicaltherapy management in-depth. They made it so easy for me to catch up! 3. Being open to receiving both positive and negative feedback, as this is needed during the product development journey.
Hello all 👋 1. I'm happy to announce that my incredible time at Akoma Health ended a few weeks ago. Over the next few days, I'll highlight my fantastic work as the Clinical Operations, Partnership and User Engagement Lead. This particular Role challenged me in several ways as I had just transitioned from a core care-related role, so I'll share some of my achievements and learnings. 🧵

Hospital Pharmacist with experience in Medicines Information and Academia. Passionate about education, and self development to influence the next generation of pharmacists.
Times are changing and we must advocate for pharmacists to become more well-rounded individuals! I am planning to start a mentorship program for pharmacy students, trainee pharmacists, and early career pharmacists. I believe many would benefit from having a pharmacist mentor outside their direct work/university environment to support their personal development. I don’t want to give too much away but some of the much requested skills and topics I am planning to offer through the mentoring programme include: - Careers: Finding, Applying for jobs and interview preparation - Transitioning between Pharmacy sectors - Public and Global Health - Understanding Patients Psychology - Confidence Building - Managing Stress - Avoiding burnout - Work vs Life Balance - Finding your place in the team Please share with anyone you think might find this useful! And let me know if you'd like to find out more or get involved!
