What is the history of #sorghum in North America? For some perspectives we turn first to a True Treats Historic Candy LLC article that offers very good broader US historical context while focusing on sorghum syrup or molasses: "The Triumph, Defeats, and Ultimate Victory of the Sorghum Syrup" https://lnkd.in/gNVWscWy The National Sorghum Producers quarterly magazine, Sorghum Grower, has a nice article taking the focus more to the US central plains "sorghum belt" entitled "Milo or Sorghum What Say You?" https://lnkd.in/gFCQj8Sq (scroll down to p. 6) What about the oft-mentioned role of Benjamin Franklin in the introduction of "broomcorn" (another name for sorghum) to the US? It turns out that sources are not clear, even if he had a role in promoting it: https://lnkd.in/g3PW_kV5 It bears noting, in any case, that the first seeds of sorghum in America likely came with enslaved Africans (like seeds of pearl millet & African rice, to speak only of grains). Among the sources discussing this: https://lnkd.in/gMr7zkSX Sorghum came as a crop to Canada only about 3 decades ago: https://lnkd.in/gWSPmkfy Altho sorghum may have come to Mexico much earlier, the first publication about it there was in 1882, and its cultivation as a crop was boosted beginning in the 1950s by availability of hybrid varieties from Texas (per a 2002 paper by Hector Williams-Alanís, "Sorghum and Millet in Mexico"): https://lnkd.in/gNMbFsxb Sorghum is NAMA's #milletofthemonth in June 2024.

Corn Harvest Starts This Week! Here are some lesser-known historical facts about sweet corn: Ancient Origins: Sweet corn, or maize, was first domesticated around 10,000 years ago in Mesoamerica (present-day Mexico and Central America). It was a staple food for many indigenous civilizations such as the Maya and Aztecs. European Introduction: Sweet corn was introduced to Europe by Christopher Columbus upon his return from the Americas in 1493. However, it took several centuries for it to gain popularity as a food crop in Europe. Nutritional Importance: During the American Civil War, sweet corn was highly valued for its nutritional content and ease of cultivation. It became a staple food for both soldiers and civilians during this period. Genetic Development: The modern sweet corn varieties we enjoy today are largely a result of selective breeding efforts in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. These efforts focused on enhancing sweetness and flavor, as well as improving disease resistance and yield. Cultural Impact: Sweet corn has played a significant role in various cultural traditions. For example, in many Native American cultures, the first harvest of sweet corn is celebrated with ceremonies and festivals to honor its importance as a food source. These facts highlight sweet corn's deep historical roots and its journey from ancient Mesoamerican staple to a beloved global food crop. #Scotlynn #SweetCorn #SweetPac #ScotlynnAg #OntAg #FarmFresh #HistoricalFacts #NutritionalImportance #SweetCornHistory #AgriculturalHeritage

Happy World Bee Day! 🐝 Bees are an important part of our ecosystem as they pollinate our plants and crops. 🌱 Did you know? If the queen bee dies, worker bees can create a new queen by selecting a young larva. They feed the larva special food called ‘royal jelly’ so it will develop into a fertile queen. ✨ Find out more interesting facts about bees at https://lnkd.in/g_9Bz_7
