The spatial fabric and morphology of the historic urban landscape of Downtown Kingston, Jamaica including its architecture representing key reggae music sites, should be preserved, conserved, and showcased as an international stage. In West Kingston, the birthplace of reggae, the plight of the urban poor and the imperative to protect cultural heritage urge a reckoning with the legacies of enslavement. Using key reggae recordings to punctuate discussion, I explore a decolonization agenda through architecture conservation specifically linked to reggae. Music in Jamaica has echoed its history and chronicled life on the island, including housing conditions. Reggae thus serves as a significant roadmap of social conditions in Kingston. These magnificent homes not only encapsulate centuries of architectural evolution but also serve as a vibrant tapestry of cultural history.   Historical Roots: Many of these stately homes were strategically built on ancient fortifications. Though not fortified themselves, they stand as modern guardians of history, having transitioned from the first architect-designed mansions of Elizabeth I and James I's reign to versatile contemporary icons.   Cinematic Charm: These grand residences have frequently graced our screens, providing backdrops for classics like Downton Abbey, Harry Potter, Brideshead Revisited, and Bridgerton. Their opulent halls and sprawling gardens offer the perfect setting for storytelling.   Diverse Uses & Ownership: While some of these homes are still privately owned by the families who built them, others have found new lives as museums or enchanting hotels, with organizations like the National Trust ensuring their preservation. They continue to host everything from music festivals to fancy-dress events, keeping their heritage alive in the community.   Iconic Examples: Notable among them are Bodrhyddan Hall in North Wales, Plas Newydd, and the illustrious Blenheim Palace, the birthplace of Winston Churchill.   These stately homes are not just architectural marvels but also hubs of cultural and social activity, each with a story to tell. What’s the biggest difference between art and public art? NO WALLS! I love visiting galleries, but they can be intimidating places to visit. White walls can be boundaries, they keep marginalised communities out of the conversation. Public art breaks down social barriers, liberating creativity and craftsmanship from the confines of traditional, often exclusive spaces. Art in the public realm has the power to reshape our cities into communal galleries, making artistic expression a shared experience. This free-spirited nature dissolves the exclusivity, inviting everyone to be a part of an encounter or conversation. In these challenging times, art outside becomes a beacon of hope and a powerful tool for reshaping our collective experiences while fostering cultural identity to build more inspiring destinations to visit. Art trails are becoming more and more popular, they help connect neighbourhoods, communities and hard to reach districts. I’m a massive fan of ambitious projects like 'The Line' in London where everyone can explore art, nature and heritage for free. I'll certainly be visiting next time I'm in the smoke! GRAND RAPIDS ART MUSEUM GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN, USA (1983) https://lnkd.in/esSAhwYC This proposal revitalizes the city's downtown area by reusing a distinguished, but now vacant, former government building and by adapting a number of abandoned or underused neighboring structures for additional cultural functions. The main 1908 Beaux-Arts building is upgraded to meet codes and programmatic requirements. A relocation of the entrance from the closed side of the U-shaped building to the open court-yard establishes a direct physical relationship between the museum and its surroundings while creating a single, unified entrance. Covering the court-yard, a translucent inclined plane of stairs has an opening at its center that leads to the Grand Foyer which is a shared space for the different departments. Water descends slowly and evenly from the top of the stairway along a channel carved into the plane, leaving a clear pedestrian path for those walking up the stairs. This water is, in fact, the very water used for the air-conditioning system. In this way, the need for an unsightly cooling tower has been eliminated and this silent cascade becomes the focal point of the city's newest public space. The new station of Metro C of Piazza Venezia in Roma is destined to become a symbol of a strategic infrastructure for the city. This one-of-a-kind station will be developed at a depth of 40 meters with eight underground levels and three entrances that will allow travelers to reach the major museums of the square (Palazzo Venezia, Vittoriano, and the Imperial Forums) without ever emerging on the surface.
