Time flies when you are having fun, so they say! The last three days of Electra Mining Africa have flown by! Day 4 started with a one-on-one with Brenton Spies, MD of Booyco Engineering (Pty) Ltd, discussing the company's anti-idle Auxiliary Power Unit (APU), which is making its grand debut at Electra Mining.
Recognising diesel consumption as a major cost, the APU, when applied to haul trucks and other machinery, results in significant savings when coupled with the OEM or aftermarket HVAC unit.
The APU keeps the HVAC system running while the main diesel engine is off, ensuring operators stay cool and comfortable during idle periods like loading. This is crucial, especially given that air conditioning is now classified as a Class A hazard. This innovation dramatically reduces diesel costs and carbon emissions by eliminating the need to run the main engine in order to provide power to the HVAC unit.

Drilling in Romania’s Moftinu region is notoriously challenging. Penetrating the reactive shales at depths of 400m-1000m is difficult as the shale swells around the drillstring, resulting in 5-10 tons of excessive torque and drag in the tightest spots.
Discover how our specialists rose to the challenge by tailoring our field-proven Evolution® high-performance water-based drilling fluid system customized with novel polymer chemistry that delivered:
· 30% Improved rate of penetration (ROP)
· 50% Reduced weight-on-bit (WOB) by reducing torque and drag
· 44% Reduced drilling time
· 57% Less time spent on wiper trips
· 22% Reduced total well cost

B2B Digital Marketing (Co-Founder: RunInAll, LLC Houston) & High Speed Turbo Drill Motor (Co-Founder: PKT-Turbo, FZCO-DMCC Dubai): 45 years experience in the Oil & Gas
Servka's leadership and technical representatives were invited to the #subseatieback forum and exhibition held Feb 27 - 29, 2024, in San Antonio, Texas, at Henry B. González Convention Center. This event culminated in an active engagement of Servka's managing director, Kadima Agostinho, PMP, MBA, with members of SUT (Society of Underwater Technology), of which he is a member, and his vivid participation in lessons learned sharing by #exxonmobil , #chevron , and #petrobras. Kady navigated through the following topics, some of which centered on projects that he was personally involved in as part of his subsea experience:
AB15 Redevelopment Project - Infield Tieback Challenges in a Mature Field, by Darren Flowers – ExxonMobil
He shared the challenges and lessons learned from the in-field program in a mature subsea field in Angola Block 15, including the Kizomba FPSOs. The discussion focused on controls obsolescence issues, considerations between using original equipment and tooling versus the latest/standard vendor offerings, blending original and current project specifications, and modification of existing equipment to meet new project requirements.
Water-Alternating-Gas (WAG) Flowlines - Evolution and Maturation, presented by Rafaello Perotto and Lilia Bukahi - Petrobras
The panel discussed the effective application of the WAG method in the Santos Basin pre-salt fields, consisting of alternated water and gas injection for reservoir management. The debate dived into some of the risks associated with the WAG strategy, such as the existence of a pressure class spec break in the XT, the risk of hydrate formation, and gas migration through the double barrier. The debate and discussion outlined some effective mitigations that Petrobras is currently implementing.
Subsea Choke Vibration: Identification of Root Cause, Assessment of Fatigue Impact, and a Design to Mitigate, by Matt Dionne - Chevron
Vibrations were detected on gas wells' subsea chokes during certain operational scenarios in transient conditions related to flow rate and pressure. After further analysis, including acoustic finite element analysis of the tree and choke, vibration measurement and modeling efforts were
validated, leading to mitigation measures and their integration into standard operating procedures. Model validation allowed for the proposal of the choke plug and cage assembly design change, resulting in significant vibration force reduction. During the debate, Kadima stressed the importance of assessing possible effect of external forces acting on the choke, including hydrostatic pressure, to determine any potential correlation with the FEA results.
We extend our appreciation to Endeavor Business Media, LLC, for organizing this year's conference, #mcdermott for sponsoring the students' design competition, and all participants who warmly engaged with us.
We invite you to consult with Servka's #subseaengineering experts should you need project support or personnel training.
