Having found a way to be kinder to pets and the planet with his product range of insect-based dog food, London Business School alumnus Alessandro Di Trapani has announced the launch of the Grub Club range of dog foods into British pet supplies retailer, Pets at Home. Select products from Grub Club’s line-up will be available at 466 Pets at Home stores throughout the UK, as well as on the retailer’s e-commerce website. Founded in 2020, Grub Club seeks to create more sustainable dog foods by leveraging insect proteins. Upon learning that pets consume 20 per cent of the world’s fish and meat proteins, Alessandro Di Trapani, chief executive officer, and Hugh Petit, chief operating officer, founded Grub Club to “shake up the industry.” Grub Club replaces traditional, animal-based proteins with alternative proteins from black soldier fly larvae (BSFL), which offers several environmental benefits. According to Grub Club, its food was found to help reduce carbon emissions by up to 1.5 tonnes per dog annually. Additionally, the company found that if just one per cent of the UK’s 12 million dog population switched to Grub Club, it could help prevent 180,000 tonnes of carbon emissions per year. #sustainablebusinesses #entrepeneurship #enterpriseeconomy https://lnkd.in/eT6x5-TE

The brightly colored snacks were created by animal food manufacturer Flakall Corporation in Beloit, Wisconsin in 1935. To make the feed, a grinder was used to flake corn. In order to clean the machinery, staff fed moist corn into the grinder. This process, to the surprise of workers at the plant, produced airy blobs of corn. And so, the first corn puffs were born. Edward Wilson, an employee, saw potential in the little puffs and took some home to season and see if they could be eaten by humans. The result was Korn Kurls, according to Atlas Obscura. The product was such a success that Flakall broadened its line of products to include snacks for humans and animals – changing its name to Adams Corporation to distance itself from its farm feed past. Other firms also stake a claim in the invention of the cheese puff – including the producers of Chee Wees who developed similar snacks in the early twentieth century. But the game changed in 1948 when Cheetos were produced, and they have since become the most popular brand of cheese curl in the US. Cheese puffs have since spread across the world - from Wotsits in the UK, Pofak in Iran, and Twisties in Australia. #UnderstandingPetParents | Insight Vol.1 📢 Insect meal is a sustainable and healthy alternative to feed cats 😺and dogs 🐶. But how do pet parents feel about sustainability ? Does it matter to them when they choose their brand to feed their pets ? 💡Let’s have a better understanding of their opinion thanks to this Yummypets consumer study made in Belgium, Canada, France, the UK and USA. While the UK pays less attention to the presence of biolabels such as #Canadaorganic, #AB, #BCorp or #Ecocert on packaging before puchasing a product (50%), French pet owners pay more attention to it (82%). #insectfood #insectindustry #sustainableworld

Love this insight from Shannon Falconer Ph.D. on the importance of focus 👇 When asked: If you could go back to when you were starting with BioCraft, what is one big thing you would have done differently? Her reply: We would have focused on cultivated meat as an ingredient from day one and not pursued, in tandem, building a consumer-facing brand. Focus is everything! If you haven’t read the entire interview yet, you can check it out here 👇 https://lnkd.in/gjPBcQTB

Is beef a more ethical and sustainable choice than cheese? Just listened to a fascinating interview by PJ Vogt on the Search Engine podcast with Annie Lowrey who posits that because, in the USA, beef cattle have a far better life out on pasture than diary cattle and a 10x better one than factory farmed chickens, it's more ethical to eat beef than other farmed meats and most diary products. If animal quality of life is your main consideration that makes sense. Similarly some vegans eat oysters, because they have no central nervous system. However, as cattle produce far more C02 than other farm animals, which consideration takes precedence? Treating animals humanely and reducing carbon emissions from them are both part of the bigger sustainability picture, so would love to hear anyone's thoughts on this. Clearly just going vegan is the obvious answer but that's not something most people are considering currently. #tuuecostayawards #sustainablehospitality #ecohotels #sustainabletravel #vegan #animalwelfare
