Open the windows. Imagine a world where our only view is our reflection in a mirror. A world confining us to our own beliefs with no opportunity to see beyond them. Imagine those mirrors being replaced with large, open windows that allow us to see the world beyond our reflection. I recall a story about a chimpanzee named Vanilla. Sadly, Vanilla lived in a cage for the entire 28 years of her life until rescued and re-homed to the Save the Chimps sanctuary in Florida. As the door of the building housing the chimpanzees opened, Vanilla hesitated to leave. The only world she had ever known was a small, enclosed cage. Dwight, the alpha male, encouraged her out into the open. Vanilla overcame her fear, lept into Dwight's arms, and saw the sky for the first time in her life. She stood still for a moment, staring up, with her mouth hanging open as if to say, "Wow." I saw the heartwarming and touching video of Vanilla exploring her new life on the island and being welcomed by her new family of fellow chimps. This is what education does for us. It opens doors to things we may have never imagined existed. 🚪 Education isn't limited to a degree or formal schooling; it's all around us. We just need to shift our perspective.
