A key part of that security is keeping your Wi-Fi protection protocol current. So, what are WPA, WPA2, and WPA3, and why does it matter which one you use? WPA (Wi-Fi Protected Access): Launched as a band-aid for the problems with the earlier WEP standard, WPA offered better security but was not without its issues. WPA2: This has been the standard for a while now, offering enhanced encryption and more secure key management compared to WPA. Yet it is not invincible; new threats have emerged that can exploit certain weaknesses in WPA2. WPA3, the latest and most secure Wi-Fi security protocol, does not only give much-improved protection, even when passwords are weak; it also features individualized encryption for better privacy in open networks. This makes it really strong in the modern-day cybersecurity landscape. Why does this matter? An outdated protocol like WPA, or still, WPA2, can let attacks be run on your network. An insecure network, on the other hand, is an open invitation for cybercriminals to intercept data, monitor your activity, or even inject malware. Therefore, setting up and maintaining a secure network is key to keeping data safe and private. Here’s how to secure your network connections: 💠 Use a VPN (Virtual Private Network): A VPN encrypts your internet traffic and protects it from external access. Think of it as a private tunnel for your online activity. By using a VPN, you can disguise your browsing activity and sensitive data from potential attackers, especially on untrusted networks. 🔐 Check Network Security Settings Regularly review your Wi-Fi network settings. Use a strong, unique password as this is your first line of defense. if your router supports it, use WPA3 encryption to guarantee you’re using the latest security protocols. 📵 Disable Guest Network or Restrict Access: Be mindful of who has access to your network. These cyberattacks are usually aimed at accessing, changing, or destroying sensitive information; extorting money from users through ransomware; or interrupting normal business processes. In Canada 🇨🇦👮♀️🫵🏻 October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month, a timely reminder for us to take stock of our online habits. It is also a great time to learn about evolving cyber threats so you can protect yourself and your information. "Digital services, cloud and mobile technologies are part of our everyday life, be it for personal or professional use. With this comes the potential for cyberattacks. Last year, we successfully blocked an average of 129 million potentially malicious attempts every day to connect to the Government of Alberta’s network. “Cybersecurity Awareness Month is also a good reminder for every Albertan about the risks that exist online and the importance of taking appropriate action to protect your information. This could include using strong passwords, keeping your software updated and being cautious about clicking on links or opening attachments from unknown senders. Regularly backing up your important data is also a good way to protect yourself in case of a cyberattack. Just as we lock our doors and windows to protect our homes, we need to take steps to protect our digital lives.
