I made a joke last night on a panel. It was an #insidebaseball joke, and it got a few (courtesy) chuckles, but trust me, it wasn't funny. One of the panelists was talking about the ambiguity of how to count things given a somewhat vague question (and he listed 3 or 4 ways one could do it). I added a fifth -- "The way you would count your customers is COUNT(DISTINCT customer_id) FROM the customer table." In the words of #simpsons legend McBain, "That's the joke." The customer table described is "one row per customer." And yet, I added the word distinct. Even tables that we expect to have a unique customer_id, sometimes don't - or in other words, data is almost always messy and needs careful examination before analyzing. "It's funny cause it's true?" or if you have to explain a joke, it's not funny? https://lnkd.in/gbrdPPwc
