Michael Jordan, one of the greatest basketball players of all time, once said, "I’ve missed more than 9000 shots in my career, lost almost 300 games, and failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed." This quote is a reminder that failure is not the end; rather, it's an opportunity to learn, grow, and ultimately succeed. I just watched the documentary "Bye Bye Barry", a story of NFL great Barry Sanders and his ultimate decision to leave the game. #20 was a childhood hero of mine and watching him play was pure magic. While watching his story, there are some takeaways for how to live life and parallels to my decision to leave the public sector and to move into the private sector. 1️⃣ The team's accomplishment is more important than individual success. This reminds me of what I have told my son while playing; "The name on the front of the jersey is more important than the name on the back." 2️⃣ Be humble and "act like you've been there before". Awards and accolades are not everything. Let your actions do the talking. 3️⃣ You can be the best of the best, but if the team around you cannot keep up, success is not guaranteed. A solid well-rounded team can be the difference in winning championships. 4️⃣ No matter how great your career's journey is, when it is your time to hang up your cleats, it is time to leave on your own accord. Leave while the decision is still yours. Regardless who is upset by your decision, you have to do what is best for you. #behumble #liveyourbestlife #teamwork

Brooks Robinson, hall of fame baseball player, was incredibly inspirational to me growing up. He passed away in 2023 and was arguably the greatest 3rd baseman of all time and played for my childhood hometown Baltimore Orioles. He helped make wiffleball in our backyards and every local baseball diamond - no matter how unkept or overgrown - our very own Field of Dreams. So, in honor of Brooks here's a lesson for life from the 1989 baseball movie classic, Field of Dreams. He may not have been the mainest (my made-up word) of main characters in Field of Dreams but he did have a totally awesome nickname — Dr. Archibald “Moonlight” Graham — and he did deliver some of the most inspirational lines in the movie. One of my favorites that’s worthy of repeating: “We just don’t recognize life’s most significant moments while they’re happening. Back then I thought, ‘Well, there’ll be other days.’ I didn’t realize that was the only day.” Significant moments don’t have to be life changing events, like graduations, births, marriages, career accomplishments, or wrecking your mom’s car trying to jump railroad tracks with your best friends. (That last one wasn’t life changing, but it was significant because we did get airborne for a second or two.) In actuality, the most significant moments are sometimes the ones that wouldn’t necessarily end up in a scrapbook of life highlights. One of my favorite life quotes comes from an ’80s movie. Ferris Bueller says, “Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop to look around once in a while, you could miss it.” It really does. The significant moments may not seem significant at the time, but there are no other days or moments that will be the same as the one that is happening right now. They really are like snowflakes. None are the same. Embrace them, particularly with the ones you love. Memories are great, but moments are better. Memories can’t replace the present. Here comes another soccer analogy for you... (can you tell we're knee-deep in the season?) This past weekend, my daughter and one of her school friends played against each other. Objectively, my daughter's friend was a little better and a little speedier. She scored a few times. But after scoring, she and my daughter would high-five each other and celebrate together. Even though they were on separate teams. They were friends first and that's what matters. And a few minutes later, my daughter scored a goal too. Think about this with your competitors...sure you may not necessarily be "friends," but you can still celebrate their wins. There is room for everyone at the table. Last night, the Boston Celtics clinched the NBA championship in a remarkable victory. One of the announcers said it was Jayson Tatum's "growth through failure" that allowed him to succeed tonight. Tatum's relentless work ethic and ability to learn from past experiences (remember the 2022 Finals?) were on full display last night. His resilience and dedication, despite setbacks, paved the way for his success. Al Horford's story is equally inspiring. After 17 seasons, he finally won his first championship. His journey is a testament to the power of hard work and the true power of persistence. Success in business, just like in basketball, isn't about luck. NFL Draft Day🏈 I need to be honest and say I am not that into the outcomes of the NFL Draft, but I am more amazed to watch dreams come true right before your eyes. All of these athletes have fought and worked through adversity and have been playing this sport since they were kids, just like every other NFL football player before them, they have made sacrifices, worked through injuries, given up being kids and put in the work! I relate this to finding your passion in business and following through with your career goals.
