🌟 Pete's Golden Nugget for IT Professionals: If you can't hand it off, you can't be promoted 🌟 Hello, LinkedIn Community, I'd like to share a golden nugget of wisdom that I believe can be a game-changer for all IT professionals out there, based on my experience in the field. 🔍 Detailed Documentation: The Key to Advancing Your IT Career When we think about IT work, be it system administration or engineering, it's easy to focus solely on technical skills. However, one often overlooked but critical aspect is the detailed documentation of the systems we design and configure. I'd like to sum up this insight with a simple yet powerful phrase that I live by: "If you can't hand it off, you can't be promoted." 📝 Why Documentation Matters: 🚀 Facilitating Collaboration: Comprehensive documentation ensures that your team can seamlessly take over your work when necessary. It's not just about what I know; it's about how well I can empower others with my knowledge. 🌐 Scaling Impact: Effective documentation allows me to scale my impact. Instead of being a bottleneck, I become an enabler, helping my organization grow and evolve. 🌱 Professional Growth: Embracing documentation showcases my commitment to excellence and professionalism. It's a clear sign that I'm ready to take on higher responsibilities and advance in my career. In a rapidly evolving IT landscape, where collaboration and knowledge sharing are paramount, the ability to hand off work through well-documented systems is a key skill. So, I encourage all IT professionals to take this nugget to heart, just as I have. Let's invest in documentation, not just as a task but as a strategic career move. It's a step towards becoming indispensable and accelerating your journey up the IT career ladder. Have you experienced the benefits of comprehensive documentation in your IT career? Please share your thoughts and stories in the comments below. Let's learn from each other's experiences! #ITProfessionals #Documentation #CareerAdvancement #TechIndustry #KnowledgeSharing

Don't make me think. These four words gave me a whole new outlook on projects. When someone's trying to make me understand something, and I mention that phrase, you can see the lightbulb go off in their head. 💡 They realize not everyone has the same info or knowledge about a subject, and re-explaining or throwing more logs on the fire doesn't help. And if I get this feeling occasionally, then I know my clients do, too. You've got to "dumb it down," in the most positive way that can be said. Here's how applying "don't make me think" helps with scanning jobs: ➡️ it creates a project that's simple for everyone to understand ➡️ most people aren't stupid. But even if they're really smart, if you make the project easily understandable then it's more likely to succeed ➡️ if it's difficult or complex, people will stop at the first hurdle and find something easier to do. Water flows around rocks and down the easiest path Be clear and simplify! #digitization #simplicity

Expert on Documentation, Productivity, and Governance, Risk and Compliance | Owner of Risk Oversight
Training in the trendiest new framework, tool, or technology won’t determine your team’s success or their ability to solve your problems. But building foundational skills will. Documentation is a “back-to-basics” skill stack that transcends all trends, technologies, and fads. Though documentation will change with the times, the skill stack itself is timeless. Unfortunately, many (if not most) managers and recruiters are not good at screening for documentation skills. Documentation skills are not like "breathing" skills. Breathing is involuntary. But most people are not good at documenting—at least, not at first. No one is born knowing how to document. No one has all the skills of documentation either. We strengthen our effectiveness by building our individual skills and joining forces with others. Here are some of my favorite skills in the Dynamic Documentation skill stack for you to develop for yourself, your team, and your organization – note-taking, time management, interviewing, reporting, writing, formatting, basic information management, follow-up, workflow, and human psychology. For more simple but powerful documentation concepts and tips to help you build your skills and work smarter, faster, and better, check out my latest book at The24HourRule.net. #documentation #documentationbestpractices #documentationskills

However trivial documentation may be, it's something I've always wanted to be good at. I've tried different methods, grown weary of them, tried again, and eventually gave up. I was always chasing cool features, fun integrations, and new stuff. But actually, it's all about what I enjoy looking back to. Clearly, consistency has been a big problem. Believing in what people say about social commitments, I've found these good old tools to suit and I am going stick to them for at least a year (irrespective of what new cool tool comes along the way): 1. Notion: for everything related to professional / career management, will go back here to see what I did / how I prepared for anything in my professional journey 2. Medium: for public journaling, elaborate experiences, longish musings which I want in ink and can be shared 3. Instagram: I truly enjoy keeping a visual journal. I used to paint postcards from every trip/significant event, but that takes a while. This is to not miss the frames I would want to look back to, enjoy channeling my creativity, but also making sure I grab the paintbrush every now and then.

A simple but one of the most effective professional hacks - “Ability to take notes” I am still old school notebook notes taker but whatever may be your medium of taking notes, taking notes itself is an art and a matter of discipline. There are countless engagements where my sheer note taking helped me to rethink, refine our point of view and articulate the solutions to the clients in a much better way. Sadly I have seen a trend that the senior you go up the corporate ladder the lesser you take notes. I humbly recommend you getting out of this trap and not assume others will do the job for you. Ultimately no one can replace your own thought process. I have seen some brilliant minds taking notes in the most tactful manner and hence are able to keep their minds agile and effectice. Taking notes is the best way to also think on your feet and in Deal advisory & Strategy where everything is expected by clients at Deal Speed one cannot afford to not take notes. Those who have been practising this regularly pat yourself on the back :) and those who have left this behind, its never too late to pick that back up. Cheers!

Building the unified agent for your multiple apps✨ | Founder @ Beloga | Writes about productivity 📈, thought leadership 💡, and entrepreneurship 🌱
In today's fast-paced digital world, the landscape of productivity is undergoing a remarkable transformation 🌍. As someone deeply engrossed in the nuances of productivity and efficiency since I was 16, I've observed firsthand how the proliferation of tools and resources has reshaped our approach to work. However, with this abundance comes a new challenge – the need for a centralized platform to access these myriad tools effectively 🛠️. Gone are the days when a simple pen and paper, or a basic spreadsheet, sufficed for managing tasks and projects. The digital age has ushered in an era of specialized apps and platforms designed to optimize every aspect of our professional lives, from project management to time tracking, and everything in between 📈. This revolution in learning and skill acquisition has enabled professionals to adapt and thrive in an ever-evolving marketplace 💡. As we navigate this new landscape, the challenge now lies in managing the plethora of tools at our disposal. The need for a unified platform that consolidates these resources into a single, easily accessible location has never been more critical. Such a platform would not only enhance efficiency but also ensure that we are maximizing the potential of the digital tools available to us ⏳. In my latest sharing with Ness Labs, Wilson Ler and I delve deeper into this topic, exploring the implications of the digital transformation on productivity and the vital role of centralized platforms in harnessing the full power of productivity tools 💼.
