My senior year of college I was dejected after being rejected from all the investment banks and consulting firms I applied to. As an economics graduate at Stanford, I felt like I needed to show my worth by getting into Goldman Sachs, McKinsey, or one of the “top tier” firms. But now I’m proud that I took a different path, one that led me to tech sales. The rejections from banks and consulting firms were one of the best things that happened to me. Without those “no’s”, I wouldn't have gone into tech sales, which is now a passion that I can’t imagine living without. That path led me to Google, then Dropbox, Slack, Front, Streak, and most recently Twingate. By seeing and operating within both large and small companies grappling with evolving sales paradigms & frameworks, I now get to share those experiences with startup founders while providing tips on how to best design their own sales journeys. If you’re early in your career and wondering what path to take, don’t listen to the masses or be disappointed that your initial vision for success isn’t lining up with superficial expectations. Be open to taking contrarian routes to get to where you need to be. I’m now glad to be running my own business and sharing the power of authentic selling techniques while leaning into my roots as an Asian American within tech sales.
