Over the last year in Chicago, we've seen a slowdown in terms of the total number of legal moves, punctuated by a 10.4% quarter-over-quarter decrease in Q4 2023. So far, the numbers for Q1 2024 don't look promising. As of today (2/2), we're 36.3% of the way through Q1. Based on the 70 moves we've seen in Chicago YTD, we're currently on pace to see 193 total moves in Chicago this quarter, which would represent a 40% Q/Q drop. What's going on here? Are firms just hiring less? Have attorneys decided to stay put at their current firms longer? I don't have all the answers, but what I do know is that it has become increasingly important to tap into the "unposted" jobs network. The old adage--"It's not what you know; it's who you know"--rings truer than ever in today's ultracompetitive legal market.
