Sliding Doors   You know what you’re getting with a Premier Inn: a familiar experience that is somehow manifestly different every time. If you need any proof of a parallel universe, follow the purple-brick road. The routine is somehow infused with both the random and the bizarre; a hotel of self-check in surprises. It’s a trip at the end of a trip. Multiple rooms of requirement. I know, because I’ve stayed in all of them; every single one. Last Tuesday being the latest such occasion. Any stay at a Premier Inn wouldn’t be complete without a Premier Inn breakfast. It’s an optional extra that isn’t really an option. It’s impossible to turn down. I mean, what sort of weirdo goes for the Continental? In an effort to pre-empt the all-you-can-eat buffet, I’d hauled myself out of the king-size for a tokenistic jog, returning to the elevator three laborious miles later. This particular lift resembled Covent Garden Underground without the Underground: separate doors to enter and exit from. Interestingly, in a corridor world where you’re instructed to tiptoe (not really!) you’re left to fathom this detail for yourself. Which brings me to the highlight of the week. I hear the lift descend, doors opening with a Star Trek swoosh. In front of me I’m faced with a back. A high-vis tabard with luminous reflectors advertising ‘Alan Dick Plumbing’. Time stood still and so did Alan, not unreasonably waiting to alight through the very same set of doors through which he entered. After a 5-second eternity, I politely enquired if Mr Dick was intending to get out of the lift. 180 degrees later, it was a beautiful moment; one that Alan and I shared together, all before seven o’clock in the morning. We bonded, chuckling over the slapstick nature of the sliding doors, before continuing our respective ways. You’ll be pleased to know, Alan proceeded in the conventional sense rather than moonwalking. Day made. It's easy to go about your daily business in a social vacuum, imagining we’re all disconnected on our individual journeys through life’s travails. The reality couldn’t be further from the truth. We’re social animals, wired to connect, whether consciously or unconsciously. You simply cannot not have an impact on every single person you meet every single day. Connection is good for the soul. In a world where everyone is waiting for someone else to make the first move, it’s time to quit waiting. It’s far better to be the person who smiled than the person who didn’t smile back.
