This week I’m celebrating 5 years at CHG Healthcare.  The last 5 years have been the most transformable years of my life – both personally and professionally. To paint you a picture, I started at CHG living in Fort Lauderdale, my hometown, with no intention of ever leaving Florida. A few years later, I challenged myself to imagine a future bigger than that, which led me to moving by myself to Salt Lake City, UT where our HQ is – one of the scariest yet most impactful decisions I’ve ever made. Today, I work remote for that same company that inspires me to be my best self where I feel my best self – now in Bozeman, MT.  I’ve learned so much these few years, I could write a book. But I’ll simplify with a few:  𝟭. 𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗯𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝘆𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴, 𝗯𝘂𝘁 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴. This saying has always resonated with me. It’s a reminder to aim high in what you want to achieve but to recognize that trying to be everything to everyone, all at once, serves no one—including yourself. 𝟮. 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗼𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗦𝘆𝗻𝗱𝗿𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹 – 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗻𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗹. There were times I questioned whether I belonged in the room. Over time, I’ve realized that the discomfort of growth means I’m exactly where I need to be. 𝟯. 𝗩𝘂𝗹𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝘀 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻. The deepest relationships I’ve built inside and outside of work are only built on mutual trust from sharing parts of ourselves not everyone gets to see. I’m thankful to so many for creating and holding that space for me.  𝟰. 𝗔 𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗼𝗻 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗺𝘆 𝗱𝗮𝗱: 𝗴𝗼 𝘀𝗹𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗼 𝗴𝗼 𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗴. Burnout hit me harder than I care to admit. With a long-term vision of CHG being my forever home, I knew I had to find balance at work and home. A mentor of mine said it best, “you can’t pour from an empty cup.” I look back on 5 years that I’m incredibly proud of. I’ve built relationships at levels I never thought I’d have access to, I’ve conquered goals I thought would take until retirement to achieve, and I’ve found a workplace where I can show up authentically as me every. damn. day.  Cheers to the next 5 years – I can’t wait to see what’s ahead (or where the heck else I move to!).

It's time for the obligatory Christmas break post. [Insert end-of-year niceties here] This is the season in which we arbitrarily emphasise reflection, be it rewinds, recaps, playbacks or 360s; I decided to get in on the act. For many, 2024 has been a tough year, with new challenges, changing environments, and the insanity of global events. There are two things that, upon reflection, I have become much more certain of this year. 1. It's luck. Careers are often built more on luck than we care to admit. Of course, hard work and talent play their part, but many of the opportunities that shape our careers come down to timing, being in the right place at the right moment, and meeting the right people. It’s a humbling thought, but success isn’t just about what we do but also about circumstances we can't control. By extension, our accomplishments are never entirely our own but an outcome of a chain of events stretching back beyond our actions. 2. The more you know, the harder it is to make up your mind. Nuance isn't trendy right now, but we should probably try harder to make it so. Too often, we fall into the trap of thinking in binary terms: right or wrong, true or false. But life and the challenges we face rarely fit neatly into those categories, whether it's the adoption and future impact of #AI, our approach to #Inclusion, #MentalHealth, and general employee wellbeing, and how we communicate and treat each other right here on social media. Spending time with you this year has been a highlight and a wonderful example of my luck: Cara North, Jonathan Rock, MBA, Lauren Waldman, Learning Pirate, Heidi Kirby, PhD, Jonathan Hill, Assoc CIPD, Joseph Suarez (I feel I have missed some names here as well, sorry!) 2025 sees some big changes for me: - Stepping down as chair of The Learning Network on 20th January - Relaunching Evolve L&D's training offerings to L&D teams - Running a workshop and interview at World of Learning in February and then speaking at LEARNTEC in May - Running a bunch of IDTX (Instructional Design Tips Exchange) events - Less work stuff and more mini painting, gardening, reading, making things, and going places. Thanks for a great year. Here's to luck, nuance, and more minced pies, cheese, and port than any of us really need to consume (but we will).

🔔 Holiday season vibes: Corporate vs Healthcare Edition Picture this: Your corporate friends are out celebrating in their sparkly outfits, toasting champagne, and laughing about the year’s wins. 🥂 Meanwhile, healthcare workers are… zombies. 🧟♂️ Exhausted, overwhelmed, and running purely on adrenaline and caffeine. Doesn’t sound fair, does it? 🔴 In the corporate world • Christmas parties with cocktails. • Long breaks to recharge. • End-of-year bonuses and awards. 🟢 In the healthcare world • Back-to-back shifts. • Overflowing emergency rooms. • Minimal time for family celebrations. Last year, I spent Christmas Eve in the pharmacy working a 12-hour shift. At midnight, when the corporate world counted down to festivities, I was counting tablets for someone who desperately needed their medication. 🕰️ And I wasn’t alone. Doctors, nurses, pharmacists, and front-line staff everywhere held the fort so others could enjoy the holidays. 👉 Healthcare isn’t just a career. It’s a commitment. One that doesn’t pause for celebrations. To every healthcare professional this season: We see you. We appreciate you. We need you. My First Ambulance Ride and Embracing New Experiences Last week, I experienced my first ambulance ride. For about a week, I had been feeling a tightness in my chest near my heart. When the discomfort spread across my entire chest, I decided it was better to be safe than sorry and called for medical help. (I couldn't help but think: the last thing I wanted was to find myself knocking on the pearly gates, only to be asked, "Why are you here? We gave you enough warning!") Thankfully, all my vitals turned out to be fine, with no signs of any heart issues. I'm incredibly grateful for the rapid response of the ambulance paramedics and the care I received at the hospital. Despite the obvious strains on our overloaded and under-resourced health system, I'm thankful for the service they provide. 🙏 Heros. During the ride, I took a selfie and asked my darling wife, who accompanied me, to smile. I believed in us both staying positive rather than worrying unnecessarily – an attitude that proved to be the right one. After all, I believe in worrying only when it's truly time to worry. This experience got me thinking about "firsts" and how they continue to shape our lives, even as we get older. So, what new experiences are you having this week? As for me: - I'm meeting seven career transition coaching clients for the first time - I'm interviewing five people for a role, all of whom I've never met before - I'm visiting a new part of Sydney for the first time - I'm being pushed out of my comfort zone in two work-related areas and one sports-related area Here's to embracing non-routine activities and first-time experiences – even at my age! Thanks to LinkedIn, I just noticed my work anniversary - five years at the Hospital Association of Oregon. Taking on a new role running a state hospital association with a new team in a new state three months before the pandemic was a special kind of leadership test. (I think I passed?) In some ways it feels like I’ve been here forever, and in other ways it feels like I’m just getting started. The pandemic brought new and unprecedented challenges to the health care system, and a new normal more difficult than before. A few thoughts as I look ahead to the next five years: 1) People need hospitals and their presence is not a guarantee. Hospitals have saved the lives of people I love. Keeping their doors open is my North Star. 2) There really is no more money. Over half of Oregon hospitals are consistently in the red. Yet the narrative about hospitals on LinkedIn and among some advocates and policymakers is stuck in the past and does not recognize this new reality. 3) The challenges are significant and structural. We have not yet reached a tipping point. But when we do, leaders must be ready to work together to create something new. And that new thing must be centered on patient and community well-being. 4) We are the people who will do it. See #1. Happy holidays, my friends. May we enter 2025 with clarity about the magnitude of our problems and hope because we are the solution.

As we approach the holiday season, it’s a good time to reflect on achievements from the year gone by. And what a year 2024 has been. A year of significant global change, with elections reshaping governments in 80% of our markets. I’m incredibly proud of how the team at PA has risen to the challenge, driving progress and working towards a positive human future. Here are just a few highlights that stand out to me: – Transforming healthcare by improving clinical trials: Alongside our clients, we’re working to revolutionise clinical research—from initial protocol design to post-market success—driving better health outcomes for patients worldwide. – Driving sustainability through innovation: Together with Diageo and Pulpac, we trialled the world’s first paper-based spirit bottle. Made from plant fibers, it’s 90% paper—a breakthrough that demonstrates the power of sustainable design. – Developing AI initiatives to drive operational excellence: Our team was recognised at the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority’s Supply Chain awards for supporting Sellafield to develop a solution which removes 90% of administrative burden from important engineering tasks, creating a strong indicator of AI's potential. – Boosting productivity to keep the world moving: At Heathrow, where punctuality is key to safety and customer satisfaction, our team delivered a 14% increase in flights arriving and departing within 15 minutes of their scheduled times during the first quarter of the year. – Accelerating digital platforms: Our award-winning work with the UK’s Building Safety Regulator brought their new digital platform from concept to live in just five months—a testament to the agility and expertise of our digital teams. – Supporting our communities: Our teams have given tens of thousands of hours volunteering in our community, from teaching kids to code to supporting prisoners back in the workplace. Closer to home, this year my youngest daughter took her first steps and the eldest learnt to ride a bike. Both huge milestones in their young lives and for us as parents. So as we wind down for the year, I’m looking forward to spending some time with them — excitement is already building for Christmas morning! 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁’𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗴𝗶𝗳𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗲𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿? For me, it’s been the gift of time and restoration. It wasn’t something I expected, and it certainly didn’t come wrapped in a bow—it came wrapped in necessity. This year, I made the tough decision to step away from my role in healthcare leadership at an organization I served for over 18 years. As much as my ego resisted admitting it, I was burnt out, physically and emotionally, and morally injured. I knew something had to change; I just didn't expect my health to initiate it. Healthcare leaders like us often carry so much— our teams, our patients, our personal and professional responsibilities. We’re constantly showing up for everyone else, as our mission-driven hearts compel us to. But how often do we stop and ask: When do I show up for me? I kept kicking the question down the road... to when this crisis is over, or when that initiative is complete, or, or, or... Slowing down felt impossible at first. My identity was intertwined with what I 𝘥𝘪𝘥, not who I 𝘸𝘢𝘴. When that fell away, I had to face a hard truth: I wasn’t really living. I was surviving. And that’s not how I wanted my story to go. What I’ve realized is this: 𝘁𝗼𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗿𝗼𝘄 𝗶𝘀𝗻’𝘁 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗺𝗶𝘀𝗲𝗱. And even if we’re lucky enough to see it, showing up frazzled and depleted isn’t really living either. This year, I’ve started something new— finding my way to greater, holistic resilience and helping others do the same. It’s been humbling, but also deeply rewarding, to know that leaders like us don’t have to keep running on empty. We can find a way forward, one step at a time. As we celebrate this holiday season, my hope for you is that you take a moment—just one—amidst the chaos to 𝙗 𝙧 𝙚 𝙖 𝙩 𝙝 𝙚, recharge, and really be present with yourself. ALWAYS...I have enjoyed and reveled in the fact that Christmas Day and New Year's Day were just a week a part - giving an obvious need to demonstrate that time can be taken to reflect, recharge, and gravitate toward family, friends, close colleagues, and family fur balls. So many years I worked through this holiday time so the managers, teams, and staff were able to take off to be with their family and friends. I did not consider this a sacrifice or to deem myself overly gratuitous, however, I did consider this to be a gift I could give back to those managers and staff that had worked so hard and so well throughout the year. As CEO of StellaVersed Consulting Firm LLC, I can actually make that decision for myself now, relinquishing the need to work through the holiday week catching up on and starting new initiatives. To get ahead and make connections with many online now, because not everyone celebrates this time of year. The desire to stay plugged in is strong and we are not given kudos for taking a much needed downtime. I have watched many on LinkedIn "Sign off, Take a couple days, I'm OUT, See ya next year" and many other fabulous ways to say I'm stepping back for a bit to reflect, recharge, and restore physically, mentally, and emotionally. As I take my turn to say this phrase - "Enjoying Some Time Away" - I wish everyone a Happy Holiday and Celebration Time in whatever way you may choose to bring about the joy, relief, and unexpected pleasures of being with those who matter the most to you.
