In their day-to-day business, hospitals use vast amounts of water, producing a potent cocktail that finds its way into our water systems through urine and faeces. Many of the drugs administered in hospitals are so powerful that the patient can only metabolise 20% of them: the rest finds its way into traditional wastewater treatment plants, which are not equipped to remove this complex micropollution and can be an ideal breeding ground for harmful pathogens and antimicrobial resistance as they swap genes and interact with pharmaceutical residues.
