Work-Life Balance Is a Cycle, Not an Achievement This cycle is made up of five distinct steps: 1. Pause and de-normalize Take a step back and ask yourself: What is currently causing me stress, unbalance, or dissatisfaction? How are these circumstances affecting how I perform and engage with my job? How are they impacting my personal life? What am I prioritizing? What am I sacrificing? What is getting lost? Only after you take a mental pause and acknowledge these factors can you begin to tackle them. 2. Pay attention to your emotions Once you’ve increased your awareness of your current situation, examine how that situation makes you feel. Ask yourself, do I feel energized, fulfilled, satisfied? Or do I feel angry, resentful, sad? 3. Re-prioritize Remember, Our priorities often shift faster than our day-to-day time allocation habits. Increasing your cognitive and emotional awareness gives you the tools you need to put things into perspective and determine how your priorities need to be adjusted. Ask yourself: What am I willing to sacrifice, and for how long? If I have been prioritizing work over family, for example, why do I feel that it is important to prioritize my life in this way? Is it really necessary? Is it really inevitable? What regrets do I already have, and what will I regret if I continue along my current path? 4. Consider your alternatives Before jumping into solutions, first reflect on the aspects of your work and life that could be different in order to better align with your priorities. Are there components of your job that you would like to see changed? How much time would you like to spend with your family, or on hobbies? 5. Implement changes Finally, once you’ve recognized your priorities and carefully considered the options that could help you improve, it’s time to take action. That can mean a “public” change — something that explicitly shifts your colleagues’ expectations, such as taking on a new role that’s designed to be less time-demanding or allows for a compressed-week model — or a “private” change, in which you informally change your work patterns, without necessarily attempting to change your colleagues’ expectations.

Setting boundaries isn’t selfish; it’s necessary. Here’s why. I used to say yes to everything until I learned the power of saying no. Setting boundaries transformed my work and life. I realized that constantly agreeing to every request was draining and counterproductive. 𝗕𝘆 𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗼𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘇𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗺𝘆 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝘆, 𝗜 𝗯𝗲𝗰𝗮𝗺𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗰𝘂𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗲𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲. Instead of attending every meeting I was invited to, I started selectively choosing which ones were critical and aligned with my goals. This allowed me to have more time and attention to dedicate to my core tasks. 𝗜 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗱𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗾𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗱. I blocked off specific hours in my calendar for deep work on important projects rather than allowing interruptions or multitasking, which made my work more impactful and efficient. 𝗦𝗮𝘆𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗻𝗼 𝗶𝘀𝗻’𝘁 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗿𝗲𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀; 𝗶𝘁’𝘀 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘃𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗼𝘄𝗻 𝘄𝗲𝗹𝗹-𝗯𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗴. When asked to take on additional projects that were outside my primary responsibilities, I politely declined and explained my current commitments. This helped me maintain a healthy work-life balance. 𝗜𝘁'𝘀 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗰𝗶𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗶𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗻 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗴𝗼𝗮𝗹𝘀. I reviewed my goals regularly and filtered out activities that didn’t align with them, such as unnecessary networking events or secondary projects that didn’t contribute to my broader objectives. 𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂'𝗿𝗲 𝗰𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗶𝘁𝘀, 𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗺 𝘁𝗼𝗼. I communicated my work hours clearly to my coworkers and stuck to them, which not only helped me manage my time but also set a precedent for respecting each other's boundaries. 𝗜𝗳 𝘆𝗼𝘂'𝗿𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗴𝗴𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗹𝗺, 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗯𝘆 𝘀𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝘀𝗺𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗯𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗿𝘆. Begin by setting aside 30 minutes of uninterrupted time each day for self-care or focused work. Gradually, extend this to other areas of your life. 𝗬𝗼𝘂'𝗹𝗹 𝗯𝗲 𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗽𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗿𝗶𝗽𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗲𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗶𝘁 𝗵𝗮𝘀. 𝗕𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻’𝘁 𝗯𝗮𝗿𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗿𝘀; 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆’𝗿𝗲 𝗯𝗿𝗶𝗱𝗴𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗮 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗲𝗿, 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗳𝘂𝗹𝗳𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗱 𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗲. Implementing a “no work emails after 7 PM” rule improved my evening relaxation time, resulting in better sleep and more energized mornings, which positively affected all areas of my life. Work-life balance involves work... 🤷♂️ Did you ever realise that over-resting has it's own set of downside? In my experience, the dangers of overworking are getting the most attention. Over-resting: 😴 Can lead to a loss of motivation, lethargy and even reduced productivity 😴 Can lead to feelings of guilt, disconnection and even worthlessness 😴 Can lead to feeling isolated from friends, family and colleague Over-working: 🤯 Can lead to burnout, emotional exhaustion and chronic stress 🤯 Can lead to increased anxiety and depression 🤯 Can affect our relationship to ourself and others So don't work too much, and don't rest too much. Or in other words, rest enough and work enough. I know, sometimes when I look at my cat lounging around, I also think life would be easier if I could spend it like her. But that's probably better as a thought than as a reality 🐈😄 Also, if you share the thought above, it might be a sign you need more rest in your life. Your body keeps the score! Make sure you listen. Mindset...it applies to everything in your life, from work to your relationships. To achieve what you desire, you must set an intention! If you do not know where you are headed you will not get to your destination. Work/life balance requires a plan if you are to attain it. Are they both in balance? You will find the most fulfillment when both are aligned. If work is draining you, you cannot possibly have your best to give at home, leading to the suffering of personal relationships. Conversely the same is true. If your relationship with your spouse has a lot of conflict, it's difficult to focus and perform your best at work. We can always use one to distract us from the other but this will have negative long-term repercussions. The ultimate goal is to feel satisfied and happy in all areas of our life.
