I've been rewatching Jack Conte's SXSW 2024 keynote, "Death of the Follower and the Future of Creativity on the Web," all week. Anyone working in social media knows the difference between a follower, a community, and a fan. The keynote is an incredibly solid, passionate argument for how to best use the web, navigate the "creator economy," and consider the value of "true fans," all of which are more crucial than ever in 2024. Death of the follower, True Fans & The Future of creativity A really awesome and true observation by Jack Conte the founder of Patreon. In a nutshell: It is not about how many followers you have (this is only for visibility) but how many true fans you have. Because they will help you make a living. Meaning pay for your creativity. And the make up to 90% of your earnings. So content creators - you need to relax. Don’t build just a huge following. Concentrate on real connections with true fans! Jack Conte, CEO of Patreon (and the genius musician behind Pomplamoose/Magaziine), recently took to the stage at SXSW. He criticises current internet algorithms for stifling creators' creative freedom and livelihoods. While the internet initially democratised creative distribution, algorithm-driven platforms like YouTube, Facebook and TikTok hinder creators' ability to reach and monetise their true fans. At SXSW 2024, Jack Conte, the CEO and co-founder of Patreon, delivered a keynote titled "Death of the Follower & the Future of Creativity on the Web." In his presentation, Conte discussed the significant challenges that current internet algorithms pose to creators, particularly how these algorithms are undermining the traditional concept of a "follower" and, by extension, threatening creators' creative freedom and livelihoods. Conte highlighted the evolution of the internet as a platform that initially democratized creative distribution and allowed creators to reach millions of people. However, the rise of algorithm-focused platforms, such as Facebook's ranking system and TikTok's "for you" curation, has made it increasingly difficult for creators to reach their following and true fans. This shift has had a devastating impact on creators' ability to be creative and support themselves financially through their work. A valuable talk about the state of creating engagement for creators of any form, it's history and where it's going. Side note, I had NO idea the founder of Patreon was the other half of Pomplamoose, which just makes my respect for both crank up at least 3 notches. I caught one of Pomplamoose's live shows at the Triple Door in Seattle and it was soooo much better than I'd expected it to be, which was already pretty high expectations. All the <3 for this duder. To me is another feather in the cap that when the leadership keeps directly involved with production, they are factors of scale more effective. If you're any kind of leader, you absolutely must stay actively involved in a production role of whatever your team is doing, and DO THE WORK. Write the design docs, make the art, sing the songs - or your not leading, your pushing from behind and can't see where your actually going. https://lnkd.in/dBFWb7EB

Yesterday I took the time to watch this SXSW talk by Jack Conte, the founder of Patreon. A must-watch if you are into digital media, startups & the digital economy. At some point he talks about two very different things that are intertwined with product & business either in the news or digital media in general; “maximizing attention” or “building relationships" and how TikTok made it harder for everyone who’s relying on direct support from their community to energize their fans, build relationships and a business. A few months ago, when everyone was talking about an “extinction-level event” in the media, I was writing that the news business is suffering from a structural crisis; Conte uses a more Shakespearean phrase called “𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐃𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐡 𝐨𝐟 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐅𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫” despite his belief that the follower won’t die because the concept is too valuable for creativity on the net. Big Like. So what does he see for the future? A new wave of internet companies focusing on deeper connections on the net. Qurio aspires to be one of them, aimed at helping the industry we grew up in as professionals and are passionate about: local news. We want to help smaller news publishers make their homepages a place where they build strength with their community. Patreon has been helping art & community exist on the internet for some years now as a membership platform. Now, it’s transforming into something more holistic: A media, community, and business foundation for the next decade of professional creativity on the internet organized on the concept of the “true follower.” This is so inspiring for a tiny startup like ours, which is only in closed private beta. Great speech on Web 3.0! The next phase of Patreon is intriguing, though the model's ability to recapture the true fan remains uncertain. It's a unique crowdsourced production company led by creators, and there's still a tremendous opportunity to create human-centered experiences. The age of bespoke community experiences is coming, where smaller groups unite to create digital worlds for true engagement. ALGOBLIVION I stumbled across this thought-provoking video last night and thought I’d share it. There’s some interesting stuff in here with regards to where the internet goes next and along with it, our social audiences, as well as a snapshot of how we got to where we are now.
