Merrill Lynch, Joint MD of L Lynch Plant Hire & Haulage, talks to me about Safety on the Leica Geosystems part of Hexagon stand at Hillhead - International quarrying, construction + recycling show. With lives continuing to be lost in the wider construction industry and the dangers of people working around plant and equipment ever apparent, it’s always good to have a ‘Safety Moment’ like I did with Merrill in this video. In this video, we talked about how the business is using technology to identify incursions into the RED ZONE and how it is simply sharing real-time data with staff and customers. Merrill: “Having a safety first mindset is critical when it comes to our sector. That’s why we have recently added an extra feature to our customer portal, which allows customers to view live the number of incursions of people walking into the red zone of a working machine. “It’s so simple to use as every machine now has a QR code on it. This allows the operator or the works manager to use a smartphone to see if there have been any incursions. We also have alerts for our customers and our own team. “So, for example, if you have had incursions in the morning, you can then look at the job site and understand what changes you need to make to eliminate them, creating a safer environment for groundworkers in particular.” As well as talking about safety, I also asked Merrill what stood out for him at the Hillhead show. Merrill: “The show is amazing as there is so much to see from the OEMs like JCB and its Hydrogen 3CX to the new Thwaites Ltd prototype dumper. "It's also a great opportunity to look at lots of different technologies and solutions showcased by some of the smaller stands. That’s why I like to visit the show.” #safety #infrastructure #hillhead #safetysolutions #plantoperators #construction

But it's not quite as simple as red zones etc, as a lot of machines work with gangs on the ground. And the folk on the ground that are working with the machine aren't usually the problem, even though they are probably in the red zone for most of the day. It's all the other unrelated people milling around site in a world of their own or staring at their phone instead of looking for dangers.

Spot on Merrill Lynch . I only have one regret selling our business that we are now unable to continue our pioneering use of safety and technology to protect all those that came in to contact or involved with our operations. 10 years of retirement have for me only magnified the advances in safety using technology so I view these posts thinking, wish we had this and that in our time and so would love to implement them in some way. 🤔 Have to be satisfied with the latest gadgets in our home now but thats cool too 😎 . Keep up the good work .

Technology can certainly make the use of heavy equipment a lot safer. There are a lot of good systems on the market now. The cameras and proximity warning devices now available for machines should help to reduce risks onsite. I’ve operated quite a few construction machines over the years and some of these new systems offer a quantum leap for site safety.

Interesting. The QR code system is simple yet powerful in preventing red zone incursions.
