The Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) of leading global shipping lines have issued a joint declaration at COP 28 calling for the establishment of four regulatory ‘cornerstones’: 1. An end date for building fossil fuel-only vessels and a clear GHG Intensity Standard timeline 2. An effective GHG pricing mechanism 3. A vessel pooling option 4. A Well-to-Wake or lifecycle GHG regulatory basis “A.P. It is heartening to see that finally we can see the commissioning of methanol powered ships in shipping industry. This can be the potential game changer for the decarbonization of shipping industry. 20:80 ratio seems to be fine from commercial perspective as green methanol is 3-4 times of conventional methanol and also its availability is a big concern. Finer details are awaited in terms of net GHG emissions as well as commercial viability. Net net a positive development for maritime industry.

Several international NGOs are now disappointed and describe A.P. Moller - Maersk's pivot on LNG as hypocrisy, as it's a fuel it has previously distanced itself from. ”Maersk’s decision is likely driven by the economic attractiveness of fossil LNG in the short term. But even under the most optimistic assumptions about methane leakage, LNG cannot deliver the science-based targets Maersk has committed to,” says Inesa Ulichina, sustainable shipping officer Transport & Environment (T&E). Customers and environmental organizations have in recent years distanced themselves from LNG as it is fossil fuel and can only reduce CO2 emissions by about a fifth. Maersk says that the investment is a matter of competitiveness: ”Our fleet renewal program is fundamental to maintaining competitive edge in our ocean business, and it is a cornerstone in decarbonising our operations,” says Maersk COO Rabab Boulos, in the statement about the fleet renewal proces. #container #shipping #LNG #logistics

#oilRoq GmbH’s Managing Director Mr. Eberhard Roquette  and other 1000+ industry leaders from companies and organisations across various energy-intensive sectors, which represent €550+ billion in value added and 7.8+ million workers, have signed the #AntwerpDeclaration with the aim of urging decision-makers in the upcoming European legislative cycle to prioritise a European industrial deal. The declaration provides 10 concrete calls for a European Industrial Deal, based on 10 concrete actions, to be at the core of the next EU Strategic Agenda 2024 – 2029 while complementing the EU Green Deal. Europe’s transition to net zero should be both equitable and economically viable, balancing the imperative to maintain a strong, competitive industrial base with our goal to meet #EUGreenDeal’s objectives. Financial institutions are putting Equinor on notice. Sarasin, Sampension and others filed a resolution after years of engaging with the company without satisfactory results. 32% of their peers supported the resolution. Last year the Norwegian government put Equinor on notice with an addendum of expectations to minutes of the AGM. My expectations for next year's updated Equinor climate plan is a clear and significant shift of strategy for the company, pushed forward by the Norwegian Government and institutional investors. We need clear total emission cut plans and targets both for the short and long term, in line with climate science, including details on how capex will be spent accordingly. We are running out of time and have to stop fiddling around and pretend things like net carbon intensity targets will solve anything by itself (which was the Equinor boards response to the resolution by the investors).
