CU Coventry is part of the larger Coventry University Group - MENA Hub , and strives to provide an alternative for students when it comes to mechanical and #electricalengineering education. One of the highlights of its curriculum is the Electro-Mechanical Engineering Course, which is designed to combine traditional and modern aspects of engineering and introduce students to topics that include control, #manufacturing, and #robotics. In today's workshop, organized by Generative CAD Services Limited, our instructor Chukwubuikem Felix Amaefule gave an introduction of design and manufacturing in education. With lots of illustrations and real-life applications, he took us on a journey from normal thinking to thinking outside the box ie, design thinking. Likewise, we learned how to create an Autodesk student profile and how to install Autodesk Fusion 360. The interface of the application was also expounded to us. Meanwhile, at the commencement of the morning session, our instructor asked a final-year student about his knowledge of CAD/CAM and the student's response was not quite encouraging. This is because as mechatronics engineering students, we do not delve into mechanical engineering education fully. We are just taught its basics, alongside theoretical emphasis on electronics and software engineering stuffs without much practicals... However, after leaving the four walls of the university, as graduates, we are expected to have a standard knowledge of every engineering skill, blend them all to solve a user-centric problem, and remain relevant in the ever-evolving market. For this reason, as undergraduate students, we have our work cut out for us to utilize every chance we find ourselves in, to broaden our understanding of engineering skill sets. Dear 4th-year Mechanical Engineering Students, I am an early career researcher and Assistant Professor in the MME Department at UWaterloo seeking an MASc student to begin their studies in Fall 2024/Winter 2025, focusing on experimental testing and finite element modelling of abrasive wear and erosion processes caused by solid particle impacts in ductile materials. Characterizing and modelling the erosion resistance of lightweight materials is important since this is normally an unwanted phenomenon (debris strikes, component wear, etc.), however, erosive processes like abrasive jet machining (AJM) can also be used constructively as precise, low-energy alternatives to existing manufacturing solutions, especially for microscopic etching and surface machining. The project will be co-supervised by me (https://lnkd.in/ga3z4U93) and Professor Marcello Papini at TMU (https://lnkd.in/e28CbjgJ), with full-time studies and degree conferral taking place at UWaterloo. Possible project topics include: 1) Simulating the development of a strain hardened layer which forms below an eroded surface by simulating micro- or nanoindentation in AHSS and/or aluminum alloys.  2) Training AI models to predict erosion rates and surface damage features (e.g., roughness, waviness) for different particle jet sizes, velocities, etc. 3) Simulating a mechanically mixed, composite layer containing embedded abrasive particles (e.g., alumina powder) from erosion in polymers or very soft materials (PMMA, PTFE, copper, etc.). Professor Papini is a renowned expert in the field of erosion. Among his many accomplishments, he held a Tier II Canada Research Chair position in Abrasive Jet Technology from 2006-2017.  The attached video shows some of our ongoing collaboration involving the simulation of micro scale impacts, surface damage mechanisms and erosion using LS-DYNA. Upon completing my first year of engineering at the University of Guelph, I felt a strong desire to expand my skills and contribute to real world applications. Over the past four months, Cameron Bauman, Chase Keeler and I have created a fully functional robotic hand. At its core, the hand integrates microcontrollers, servos, transceiver modules, and flex sensors. The project can be divided into three main parts: the glove controller, the hand, and the base. Functionally, the robotic hand mirrors the user's finger movements in real-time, while simultaneously displaying the angles of each finger. Two modes are available, both viewable on the LCD screen at the base. The 'user control,' which enables direct operation of the hand, and 'preset gestures,' cycling through preprogrammed movements like a peace sign and a closed fist. A button on the glove toggles between modes. The glove was designed and tested in CAD software, ensuring compatibility with the Arduino Nano microcontroller. The NRF24L01 transceiver module stable communication between two Arduino Nanos, minimizes the need for lengthy wires. Flex sensors measure bend resistance, transmitting data to execute the hand's movements. The robotic hand replicates finger joint motion through dowels, fishing line, and MG996R servos. Strings wrap around each finger, connected to servos that bend or straighten the fingers based on flex sensor input. Everything was designed in Solidworks and 3D printed, with servos securely positioned on a custom bed. The base houses electronics not linked to the glove and features an LCD display. This screen visualizes finger angles, mode status, and wireless connection status. This addition aids in debugging, instantly indicating communication issues. There is so much to explain about this project that I cannot fit in one post. I am so happy with how this turned out and even happier with additional features such as LCD. Although there were a lot of late nights and lots of debugging throughout I was grateful for what I learned along the way. 🌟 Embracing the Future of Engineering: Empowering Placement Students🌟 Reflecting on one of the most rewarding experiences in my career journey: training T-Level placement students at our workplace. It's incredible how these budding engineers bring fresh perspectives and boundless enthusiasm into our engineering environment. Over the past 2 months, I've had the privilege of guiding these students through a variety of activities aimed at immersing them in the world of engineering. From harnessing the power of SolidWorks for design to the sheer magic of 3D printing, every moment has been an opportunity for them to grasp the intricacies of our field first-hand. One particular highlight has been our adventures in the Mechanical lab. Witnessing their curiosity and dedication as they engaged in testing and experimentation was truly inspiring. It's moments like these that reaffirm the importance of mentorship in nurturing the next generation of innovators. As we continue to embrace the future of engineering, I'm reminded of the immense potential that lies within these young minds. By providing them with the tools, knowledge, and assistance, we not only shape their journey but also contribute to the evolution of our industry. To all the placement students out there: your passion and determination are the driving forces behind the innovations of tomorrow.
