Let the digital adventure unfold! Sincerely I thought internships and field trips were solely hand-on experiences nevertheless, there is no shadow of doubt in the midst of any sundry that the virtual journey organized by the Society of Petroleum Engineers(SPE) and Ghana Gas has veritably proven to be one of the best experiences I’ve had so far.
The internship is a four-day wonderful journey organized for students. Yesterday, January 09, marked the first day of the virtual internship and I learnt the overview of the gas sector, and gas demand and supply balance.
It sounds interesting right? Yes! It was an enthusiastic, super fabulous, magnificent…in fact, it was sublime! Which adjectives again? I hope you understand my feelings towards the field trip? Please just be empathetic for a minute.
I attained knowledge about the sources of gas supply in Ghana, uses of gas, gas supply, consumers of gas, gas balance, and how to deal with excess and deficit gas supply.
The overview of gas sector also reinforced my understanding about what Ghana gas does, sectors in the industry and the upstream petroleum life cycle.
OVERVIEW OF GAS SECTOR
Ghana Gas basically gathers gases, processes, and delivers.
Sectors in the Petroleum Industry:
1. Upstream
2. Midstream
3. Downstream
Upstream Petroleum Life Cycle
1. Acquisition
2. Exploration
3. Appraisal
4. Development
5. Production
6. Abandonment
GAS DEMAND AND SUPPLY BALANCE
Sources of Gas Supply
1. Indigenous : Jubilee field, TEN field, Sankofa field (Ghana)
2. Regional: N-Gas (Nigeria)
3. Import: LNG ( yet to commence)
Uses of Gas
1. Power generation
2. Non-power generation utilization (fertilizer)
3. Transportation
4. Commercials
Jubilee and TEN fields are always raw gases, that's, they’re not processed but Sankofa comes already processed.
Gas Demand: Power and Non-power Consumption
Statistically, in the 3rd quarter of 2023, the indigenous power consumption was 231.09MMscf/d with 10% as consumption power demand and 90% as average daily gas grid power demand.
Some Consumers of Gas- Users
VRA, WAPCO, KARPOWER, GENSER, WANKANG, TWYFORD, JINTAO and many more.
Assumption of Gas Balance:
1. Team LNG is assumed to come in the 3rd quarter of 2024.
2. Gas supply forecast is based on data provided by upstream sector (GNPC and Tullow.)
3. Springfield and Aker gas reserve data aren’t currently considered.
How to Deal with Excess and Deficit Gas Supply
Excess:
1. Increase non-power demand
2. Increase gas-to-power demand
3. Strategic government investment
Deficit:
1. Addition of N-gas supply
2. Working on new fields for exploration
I express my utmost gratitude to Society of Petroleum Engineers - SPE Ghana Section, Ghana National Gas Company Limited, and its zealous CEO, Dr. Ben Asante, the host, Sheena Owusu-Ansah, speakers, Riverson Oppong, PhD., Sir Peter Amissah-Hagan, the students' liaison,
Sir Philip K. Banini and the entire staff of GNGC.
