How is AI transforming communications and public relations (PR), and what are the implications of its efficiency and personalisation? With its capacity to both enhance efficiency and personalise engagement, AI is setting new standards for how we connect with audiences. However, this advancement also brings forth challenges such as potential job displacement and ethical considerations. These important issues were examined recently at a thought-provoking forum hosted by PETRONAS in collaboration with the Malaysian Press Institute (MPI). Part of the Lunch Escape series, this event brought together communications and PR experts from Government Linked Companies (GLCs) and Multinational Corporations (MNCs) for an engaging dialogue on AI's impact and possibilities. The distinguished panel included Jagdev Singh Sidhu, Chief News Editor (Business) at The Star; Dr. Wan Norbani Wan Noordin, Director of the Transnational Education Department at Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) and Council member of the Institute of Public Relations Malaysia (IPRM); Siti Safarina Amrita Alias, General Manager, Digital Communications at PETRONAS; and Zuhairi Zubir, Head of AI Strategy at PETRONAS’ AI Centre of Excellence. Among the most impactful conclusions drawn was the collective determination to use AI not solely for efficiency but also as a driving force for innovation within communications and PR. This objective requires more than the simple integration of advanced technology — it also necessitates a deliberate response to ethical challenges and a dedication to nurturing a culture of continuous learning and evolution.
