The Overlooked Specialists: A Call for Recognition in Public Health It’s both surprising and disheartening to witness a situation where a doctor, who has dedicated additional four years to an internship or residency in public health—much like their peers in other esteemed specialties such as cardiology or hematology—finds themselves unrecognized by human resources as a specialist. This lack of acknowledgment raises serious concerns about the value placed on public health as a discipline. Public health doctors play a crucial role in safeguarding communities, preventing disease, and shaping health policies that impact millions of lives. Yet, despite the rigorous training and significant contributions they make, their expertise often goes unnoticed. This oversight not only undermines their professional standing but also diminishes the critical importance of public health in the broader medical landscape. It is imperative that we rectify this injustice. Public health specialists deserve the same recognition and respect afforded to their counterparts in other medical fields. To disregard their qualifications is not just unfair—it’s a disservice to the very foundations of our healthcare systems. Seriously, we've grown almost exclusively through customer referrals and good ol' fashioned cold emails. 2. To roll out healthcare-focused high schools across 10 U.S. communities, aiming to empower the next generation of healthcare professionals. The move pairs educational institutions with leading health systems to offer a unique blend of traditional academics and specialized healthcare classes. Students will get hands-on experience, working alongside healthcare professionals using a co-designed curriculum. The beauty of this initiative is its focus on real-world application. Students graduate not just with knowledge but with industry-valued credentials, certifications, and even direct job opportunities within partnering health systems. Immediate employment or further education in healthcare – the choice is theirs, with opportunities such as surgical technologists, radiology technicians, or respiratory therapists awaiting them. And Bloomberg's vision extends beyond the classroom. This initiative promises to create a sustainable model for bridging educational gaps and developing a robust, skilled workforce.

🌟 Career Day Reflections: Inspiring the Next Generation of Medical Professionals 🌟 This past weekend, I had the incredible opportunity to attend a high school career day. The energy and enthusiasm of the students were absolutely contagious, offering a refreshing break from the routine. Their bright, hopeful faces were a testament to the potential and promise of our future generation. Yet, amidst the optimism, there was a palpable concern about the current state of healthcare in our country. These young minds, already considering their future paths, questioned the viability of a medical career in light of recent challenges faced by healthcare professionals. They asked, "Is it worth pursuing a career in medicine given the continuous struggles and the treatment of our doctors? Are opportunities better abroad?" These questions are a wake-up call for all of us. Our nation's future doctors and healthcare providers are our collective responsibility. As we grapple with healthcare workforce shortages, it's disheartening to see talented individuals feeling compelled to seek opportunities elsewhere due to systemic issues. We must strive to create an environment where our best and brightest can thrive right here at home. Reflecting on my own journey, a quote that resonates deeply with me is, "You are free to choose, but you are not free from the consequences of your choice." To the young people considering their futures, in whichever field of practice, I offer this advice: Choose wisely. Decisions about reproductive health, substance use, and other critical areas can have long-lasting impacts on your life and career. Embrace your dreams and pursue them relentlessly. The world is a global village, full of opportunities, and there is space for all of us to succeed. Your dreams are valid, and your future is bright. Why I Transitioned from Clinical Medicine to Public Health This is a picture of me on my graduation day from Medical school. I was happy that it was finally done! I initially went to medical school because my dad encouraged me to pursue a career as a doctor. However, becoming a physician wasn’t something I truly felt passionate about. It was during my years of studying medicine that I realized where my true passion lies: not in treating individual patients, but in promoting health and preventing diseases at a broader level. After working in an ER and a secondary health facility for nearly two years, I knew I needed to change paths. Don’t get me wrong—those experiences were invaluable. Working on the front lines in a disadvantaged rural area taught me how to manage patients, staff, and even myself under intense pressure. It exposed me to the harsh realities of how social determinants impact access to healthcare and shape health outcomes in disadvantaged communities. I witnessed firsthand how the quality and cost of healthcare can drastically affect a person’s well-being and how societal health hinges on more than just treatment—it’s about prevention, education, and equity. This experience reinforced my belief that meaningful change happens at the level of public health. This is why I decided to pivot toward public health, focusing on creating solutions that address health disparities and promote long-term wellness for entire communities. I’m now pursuing my MPH and dedicating myself to finding ways to make healthcare accessible, equitable, and truly impactful. I’m excited to continue this journey, connect with like-minded professionals, and contribute to initiatives that prioritize prevention and health promotion. 💼 You don’t have to be religious to think of your vocation as a calling.   Professor Amy Wrzesniewski now at The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, has focused her scholarship on the workplace and developed three types of career orientations.    💵 A means to an end / mostly just a paycheck.  💼 A way to advance / earn prestige.  ☎️ Integral to identity and purpose — a calling.    Wrzesniewski’s research showed that those who view their job as a calling have higher satisfaction at work and more generally in their life.    This is especially apparent in healthcare.   The Bureau of Labor Statistics says nearly one-in-10 U.S. workers is in the healthcare field. Most are clinicians of one kind or another.   And they show us — every day — what it means to be led by a calling.   It’s infectious.   Our partner physicians are so clearly led by more than a paycheck or prestige. When their patients are in crisis, it’s their long-time family physician who will be taking the overnight call. It’s their calling.   Our nurses at Wellvana are spent after a day of remote patient care because they are so emotionally invested in keeping their patients as healthy as possible. Whether our patients are in the midst of suffering or celebrating renewed health, our nurses feel it, too. It’s their calling.   Then there are those of us who’ve spent a career in healthcare but always worked outside of direct patient care. This is why we share the powerful stories from our partner practices and from our Care Team. Their calling becomes our calling.   Our calling is caring.   And with caring as our calling, it's not so hard to get right out of bed every day.   Because we have much work to do. One day at a time.
