🌐✨ Reflecting on a meaningful experience facilitating a Disability Confidence session in celebration of International Day of People with Disability at Phillips Ormonde Fitzpatrick this week! 🌟 With an estimated 20% of the Australian population living with a disability, and the largest proportion of complaints to the Australian Human Rights Commission being related to disability discrimination, including many that occur in the workplace, it is crucial to engage in this vitally important discussion. It was eye-opening to discuss the intersection of the social model of disability and essential medical support. We also delved into the importance of inclusive language and building trust among teams and across the organisation, to recognise that various adjustments are vital for the many visible and invisible disabilities that are prevalent across the workforce. What struck me most were the compelling personal stories shared during the session—narratives of the everyday lived experience, and the importance of critical adjustments that make a world of difference at work. It's not just about putting in place appropriate supports, it's about fostering an environment where everyone feels seen and valued. It’s a good reminder to continue using inclusive language and championing an atmosphere where diversity is celebrated. By embracing these conversations, we're not only breaking down barriers but also cultivating a workplace where everyone can thrive. Not all disability is visible. Current CDC estimates show that 1 in 4 Americans identify as having a disability. With these numbers, making #accessability a priority has never been more important. Our January recommendation is "Demystifying Disability" by Emily Ladau. People with disabilities are the world’s largest minority, an estimated 15 percent of the global population. But many of us—disabled and nondisabled alike—don’t know how to act, what to say, or how to be an ally to the disability community. Celebrated annually on July 26th, last Friday marked National Disability Independence Day, commemorating the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), a landmark United States law prohibiting discrimination against individuals with disabilities. The ADA marks a significant achievement in American history and the ongoing struggle for disability rights.  At Alliant, we are committed to creating a workplace where disability inclusion is embedded in our organizational culture. NeuroTalent Works, a non-profit organization building neurodiverse workplaces and providing corporate career opportunities to professionals with neurodisabilities, is helping us fulfill this commitment.
