We interviewed 104 leaders of #GenAI initiatives across major enterprises and asked them which critical skills they lacked to capitalize on the new technologies. Enterprises need staff with a probabilistic and problem-solving mindset who are highly adaptable. They do not have an urgent need for software developers and prompt engineers. Services firms seeking to partner for GenAI initiatives must train practitioners who can understand the business context of data needs and implications in the business. We mustn't run the risk of GenAI becoming yet another developer-led solution... this must be a transformative business-led initiative with a clear directive from the C-Suite. When Big Data arrived, companies like Autonomy said it offered the facility to answer questions that you didn’t know you had. Is there a similar issue with Gen AI potentially taking you off the (guard)rails? If the CIO ends up as Gen AI transformation sponsor because of the heavy computer power needed then will it be back to the future with the CIO recapturing most of the IT budget and regaining the revolutionary mandate for driving competitive advantage with IT across the enterprise.
First 4 remains same for everything. The bummer was when I asked "What skill do you need to use AI?" and the answer was "Intelligence."
Fascinating insights into #GenAl initiatives! The shift towards a probabilistic and problem-solving mindset, along with the emphasis on business-led transformations, challenges conventional norms. It's intriguing to see the focus on training practitioners in understanding the business context of data needs. Looking forward to witnessing the impact of this approach in shaping the future of AI initiatives. 🚀
It's interesting that industry domain knowledge is ranked low, yet there is an emphasis on understanding the implications of data on business imperatives. A challenge that LLMs and GenAI appear to help overcome is the ability to integrate large unstructured datasets that inherently present themselves in an external scan of the wider business environment. The probabilistic mindset will find their application in demystifying the humongous informational domains that can provide greater predictability outcomes, provided dealt with a domain-led perspective in prioritizing the wheat from the chaff.
Phil Fersht couldn’t agree more. Understanding data in context is the secret sauce. What drives business benefits isn’t more developers it’s how to use data in context to drive better business outcomes.
Wonderful insights. Next 9 months will be enterprises trying to model end to end use cases, from data pipeline to benefit realisation... Product management will now shift to gen ai. A lot of development led activity is now abstracted..
Problem solving with low critical thinking and lower ethical awareness and even lower development skills... Perfect candidate to keep a seat warm.
Problem solving, adaptability, critical thinking and, communication and collaboration - these required skills are listed as top needs and these are not new necessities nor these are unique to GenAI. These are fundamental for IT and for any other life skill.

11mo"There is currently no evidence that your company will fall behind strategically or even be disrupted if you press pause to develop a thoughtful course of action rather than leaping headfirst into generative AI. In this context, leaders would be well advised to focus on the fundamental aims of their business and ask, “Will this system help us achieve our ends?” If someone says it will, ask them to prove it." https://sloanreview.mit.edu/article/dont-get-distracted-by-the-hype-around-generative-ai/
