A battery cycle is one complete charge and discharge of a battery. If you fully charge a battery and then use it until it is empty, that is one cycle. If you charge it to 50% and then use it to 25%, that is half a cycle. The capacity of a battery is the amount of energy it can store and deliver, measured in ampere-hours (Ah) or watt-hours (Wh). =AhxV (Voltage). Batteries have life cycles ranging from 300cycles (Lead Acid) to 12,000cycles(Lithium Ion). DOD Depth of Discharge also varies. For Lead Acid batteries the recommended is 50%. Discharge up to 50%, then recharge. For Dry batteries 80% DOD is recommended. For Lithium batteries 90% to 100% DOD is used. My 2Vx24=48V dry batteries (Lead Acid) are running in their eighth year. I am very keen to know the degradation of capacity over the years. This is one of my research studies. My 12Vx4=48V liquid tubular lead acid batteries are in their 4th year. I am very keen to know the remaining capacity. HOW TO MEASURE CYCLE LIFE? Perform repeated cycles of charging and discharging the battery under controlled conditions, and monitor its capacity and other parameters over time. You can use a standard battery tester also. You can also use a software program to automate the testing process and analyze the results.
