Brigham & Women nurses in #Boston have voted overwhelmingly to authorize a 1 day #strike. Why this matters: #B&W #nurses are the highest paid nurses in the State of #Massachusetts. Their #wages set the wages for all nurses across the State - no other health system will pay more to their nurses than the rates that are set by B&W nurses in the State of Massachusetts. As the largest #unionized #nursing #workforce in the #State - when nurses strike here - they strike on behalf of all #nurses across Massachusettes. They use their political weight and clout to articulate what nurses are facing everywhere but are unable to unionize and vote to strike. #Shortstaffing: Nurses continue to report unsafe staffing levels on every shift - simply there are not enough nurses to care for patients. #PatientSafety: Nurses 1st priority - their entire license - depends on keeping patients safe - make sure they get the care they need so they can go home to their families. But when there is not enough nurses - patients are at risk of harm. Infact a recent study showed that 1 in 4 patients admitted experiences an adverse event - we must do better. #ViolenceAgainstNurses: Nurses are demanding greater protection from being physically assaulted. They are tired of being the punching bags for doing the best they can in a failing system. #InvestmentInNursing: Nurses want investments made into their professional development and access to the resources they need. We should all watch what unfolds…#IStandWithNurses… #NursesOnLinkedIn #HealthcareOnLinkedIn #Strike #AdverseEvents #NursingWorkforce

It is appalling that so many states have absolutely no laws regarding rest/meal breaks! On that same note--there are countless states that do have laws supporting breaks yet many nurses still don't get them. Two things we need to do: 1) Learn your state laws regarding breaks (also read your union contract if applicable). For frontline staff make sure you are getting your legally protected breaks, if your not start asking for them and documenting it. For leaders, learn those rules and understand there is a huge legal lability for not following those laws. Millions and millions have been paid from litigation on this topic. 2) Advocate for state and national legislation to support regular breaks for all healthcare workers. Those laws should include some flexibility for our 12 hour night shift workers too. 🏥 #NurseSafety #HealthcareSafety #VolunteerSafety 🚨There’s a push to implement greater #protections for #nurses and home health care workers after a visiting nurse was killed. 😢 “You shouldn’t go to work to die, but that’s exactly what happened to this woman and family.” 🧐 Give this some thoughts. We have security within the “4-walls” of our facilities, yet, all too often sending our nurses, volunteer home healthcare workers with limited - if any - security. 🫶 For anyone reading this, viewing this who would like to speak, please reach out to me. I have some safety ideas, best practices where we can help deploy today. 📞 ⏰ Minutes matter. We might not get a second-chance. Let’s not talk, let’s #ACT today to improve safety and protect the people we termed #HealthcareHeroes. 💪 There’s a military/public safety term; “We have your six”, meaning we have “your back”, we have you covered. Let’s talk the talk and walk the walk. #ProtectOurNurses #PeopleHelpingPeople Connecticut Association for Healthcare at Home American Nurses Association HIMSS AT&T IoT AlertGPS HIMSS Southern California Chapter Dawn Marcaccio Craig Dieckhoner Julia Howard Karen Kurila Anna Courie, DNP, RN, PHNA-BC Jim Bugel Joe Drygas Clint Cetti Chris Meek Lee Wagner

Registered Nurse committed to eliminating preventable maternal mortality and advancing reproductive justice through storytelling, advocacy, education, and service.
Think about this. We expect nurses to go 12 hours without a break but also expect them to be able to act quickly, use their brains for critical thinking, and maintain composure and compassion while doing it - on no rest, little food or water, or bathroom breaks. We expect nurses to be functioning at the top of the Maslow pyramid under conditions that leave them at the bottom struggling to meet their own basic needs. I’ve been there - 7 years working night shift and can count many many times where census, acuity, and staffing left me and my colleagues hungry and mentally and physically exhausted. There are certain things you sign on to when you become a nurse but this shouldn’t be the norm.

Burnout among nurses is not because of the individuals ability. It is a result of a misbalance between needs and resources. However, this realization gives us hope towards overcoming burnout. Let us work towards creating a healthy work environments, resources and lifting those barriers (like stigma) for our nurses. #nurseburnout #nurse #workplacewellness
