"I defy the tyranny of precedent. I cannot afford the luxury of a closed mind."- Clara Barton, American Red Cross Founder
Blood is literally the only thing in our modern pharmacopeia that cannot be synthesized. In essence, it's the most natural form of medicine, and it can only come from donated (unpaid collection) blood. From platelets needed for birthing people in crisis or cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, to red blood cells creating higher quality of life for people suffering from Sickle Cell Disease, which is highly under-supported... blood is life. Literally. Donate today.
Every June 14, countries around the world celebrate World Blood Donor Day. Join the celebration & help raise awareness of the importance of a safe & adequate blood supply. There's no substitute for blood, platelet & plasma donors! Give with the Red Cross: rcblood.org/appt

We continue to co-evolve with pathogens. How have these infections influenced the evolution of our immune systems? Are people from some geographies more tolerant of certain infections than others? How do these questions matter for people living in endemic areas for specific infections today? Do doctors today have any idea when to consider an infectious causation of disease? #riskfactors #symptoms #clinicaldiscovery "The Black Death is thought to have killed about 50 million Europeans by the mid 1300s, according to estimates based on historical records and accounts. More recent research on agricultural activity at the time – which would have plummeted amid so many deaths – has suggested that the toll may not have been so dramatic everywhere, with some regions being devastated by the disease and others barely touched. Over the centuries, however, plague is estimated to have killed at least 200 million people. Because plague outbreaks were so catastrophic, researchers have long wondered whether they left some permanent imprint on the human immune system. In particular, one theory suggests that the Black Death could have been widespread enough in the 14th Century to have created a form of natural selection. The idea was that some of the individuals who survived it were able to pass on any genetic quirks that helped them do so to future generations."
Large outbreaks of plague going back over 800 years may have led to a selective pressure shaping the immune systems we have today. https://lnkd.in/e7h4xnEC
