Oh, joy! Just touching base after the incredibly productive meeting with the VViN - Vereniging van tolk- en vertaalbureaus in Nederland complaints committee regarding Powerling and that delightful little complaint letter from over 80 interpreters and translators. Surprise, surprise—still no updates. Shocking, right? Maybe, just maybe, someone will eventually figure out that keeping us informed is, you know, important. After all, our colleagues are only short €150,000 in damages, according to the NGTV | Nederlands Genootschap van Tolken en Vertalers complaints center. But hey, who's counting? Certainly not them! Just because the #PayTheDebt campaign has gone a bit quiet doesn’t mean we’ve forgotten the charming scam WCS Group B.V. pulled on our colleagues. And let’s not forget Powerling, who eagerly snapped up the perks of the acquisition while conveniently sidestepping the responsibilities. You'd think with such large amounts at stake, an extra €150,000 to compensate the interpreters and translators who built the goodwill of these agencies would be a no-brainer in the spirit of corporate social responsibility. But no, apparently that's too much to ask. Anyway, fingers crossed for some clear communication to the interpreters and translators soon. We can all babble on about agreements and codes of conduct, but without enforcement, they’re just useless pieces of paper in our industry. As soon as there’s a ruling, we’ll shout it from the rooftops, but for now, just keeping this at the forefront.

Apparently, our new government thinks it is a marvelous idea to raise the VAT on journalism from 9 to 21 percent. 😲 "By raising the VAT rate, the coalition parties aim to raise some EUR 300 million a year. In Europe, this will make the Netherlands one of the few countries with a high VAT rate on newspapers and magazines. Only Bulgaria has the same. Elsewhere in Europe, an opposite development took place in recent years: there, zero percent VAT is levied on newspapers and magazines." Says Rutger de Quay in Villamedia 'It is a totally irresponsible measure that hits private journalism the hardest. We advocate a firm zero rate, as the UK has done. In Europe, together with Bulgaria, we are the only ones who want to break up private media,' general secretary Thomas Bruning of trade union NVJ responded when asked. 'Moreover, the measure has a substantial negative impact on the important public function that private media fulfil and is completely irresponsible. With this, the Netherlands is doing exactly the opposite of what the rest of Europe is doing, raising a VAT rate where stimulating journalism would be appropriate, in times when tech companies are overwhelming the public with non-information.' 'In the Outline Agreement, the coalition parties also agreed to strengthen the institutions that help carry the rule of law, including the media. This tax increase on journalism and its impact on pluralism are completely at odds with that.' says Herman Wolwinkel (NDP Nieuwsmedia, the trade association of news companies in the Netherlands)

Whistleblowers play a key role in guarding the integrity of organisations and governments. On World Whistleblower Day Transparency International Nederland spotlights Pierre Niessen, one of ten brave whistleblowers who tried for years to show the Dutch tax authorities (Ministerie van Financiën and Belastingdienst) that their pursuit of alleged fraudsters was illegal, disproportional and unethical #Toeslagenaffaire. What if #whistleblowers had been listened to? What if the abuse of government power, which led to financial ruin, devastation of families and children being taken away from their parents could have been cut short even by a year? Protecting whistleblowers prevents corruption, abuse of power and unethical behaviour and the Netherlands needs to do better. It's an impressive clip and very much worth sharing, especially to help us all to he more conscious of the risks when nude pics and videos are shared. I was impressed by the storytelling when I saw it 2 weeks ago, but I didn't do much with it. Until today, as a similar story hit home 😞 Luckily not with my own kids, but regretfully with a teenager in one of the schools in the area. Of course it's started as seemingly funny, as being shared in a group of teenagers for a few laughs in WhatsApp. I quickly asked my son to - delete it from his phone, so he did - to ask his friends to delete it from their phones, which he did with some doubt Of course I'm not naive and this video is already being shared around probably thousands of times before it was shown it me. As my concern grew in the last hour, my kids seem not to feel the potential impact of such videos. It seems like my kids were more than apply the "listen, but don't really care" attitude. I tried to ask about if my son knew who made the video, as I thought he might. Even linking such cases to suicide seem not to invoke more call to action. Then I tried to think in a bigger way. However my first attempt to discuss it with another parent to see if it would be something that we would involve the school into seemed to crash before it even could become something. I mean if there is one way to turn this into a learning moment, it might be through the school right? But apparently my kids' school might not be too receptive to take on the opportunity to teach our children about such actual subjects, as they seem to also not to act too much about bullying. Am I overthinking this??? Should I accept that this is somehow normal and that teenagers can deal with this? I don't think I am overthinking or should accept it. I still feel bad about the video going around, thinking that this could eventually happen to my own children or one of their friends. It's part of our society now, especially also with AI deepfakes. So I guess, I just have to prepare myself for the moment that it will hit even closer to home ... hopefully not too close 😕 Anyone with relevant experiences in what to do in such cases as a concerned parent, I'd love to hear it in the replies ...
