Long duration energy storage is gaining traction. Follow the Long Duration Energy Storage Council (LDES Council) to stay abreast of developments.
#LDES is on the rise in the US! LDES Council members Form Energy, Eos Energy Enterprises, Inc., and EnerVenue are advancing new projects with Dominion Energy after the utility secured Virginia state approval for three #battery system projects. Form Energy is developing its iron-air battery technology for the Darbytown Power Station, a natural gas plant in Henrico County. Eos Energy Enterprises, Inc. will be installing its zinc-hybrid batteries at Darbytown Power Station. Pending final approvals, construction at the site is planned to begin later this year and the site will be operational by late 2026. EnerVenue's metal-hydrogen technology will help power Virginia State University's Multi-Purpose Center using metal-hydrogen batteries. "A long-duration battery will help you ride through a series of cloudy days or when the wind isn't blowing," said Brandon Martin, Dominion's business development manager. The #Time4Action is now to achieve #3xRenewables by 2030. To learn more, click below:

SUNDAY READ: Wisconsin utilities We Energies and Alliant argue that retiring coal power plants must be replaced with methane gas generation, but a cleaner, more innovative path is possible. One utility in the Upper Midwest is going down that path. Energy & Air Manager Ciaran Gallagher explains how utilities with retiring power plants can use existing infrastructure to transition to clean energy sources in "The Old & The New," featured in the latest issue of The Defender.

#renewables Illinois Considers State RECs To Subsidize Merchant Transmission To address transmission bottlenecks in the midwest, Illinois lawmakers are drafting legislation allowing subsidies from the state's Renewable Energy Credit program to be applied to new merchant transmission lines. Merchant power lines do not go into utiltity rate bases, or provide a guaranteed return to their owners, and as such don't go through the same time-consuming planning and approval processes as do utility-owned transmission assets. Given the unprecedented rate of increase in demand for power transmission, driven by data center growth, EV adoption and the "electrify everything" approach to emissions reduction, addfitional subsidies and the ability to "fast track" new high voltage DC lines now respond to a critical need.

From Small Caps: Mr Albanese says Australia has a number of high-value strategic opportunities to create value through an expanded #battery manufacturing sector including building #energystorage systems for renewable power generation in the national grid and for communities, businesses and homes. He said the new battery strategy is designed to harness Australia’s world-leading expertise in battery technology and lean into the nation’s natural advantage with #criticalminerals. 🔋💡🔋 #Vanadium batteries were invented in Australia and we have the world’s largest vanadium reserves, half of which are in NW Queensland. It’s the only type of long duration energy storage we can mine, process and build right here in Queensland. Did we mention it’s also safe and completely #recyclable (after it’s 25-30 year life)? Promising announcement for growth of CapturePoint LLC’s Central Louisiana Regional Carbon Storage Hub (CENLA Hub) through a partnership with Energy Transfer. The CENLA Hub "is one of the largest onshore deep underground carbon storage centers under development in the United States with the capacity to permanently secure millions of tons of CO2 annually that would otherwise be released into the atmosphere." Louisiana is focused on ensuring that #CarbonCapture is a safe and permanent part of our #LowCarbon energy future. #CCS #CCUS #Energy #LouisianaJobs https://lnkd.in/gwxjG__X

The UK market for long duration electricity storage (LDES) is expected to grow in 2025, as Ofgem signals development of the heavily anticipated 'cap and floor' regime based on proposals from Department for Energy Security and Net Zero. This should provide a stimulus for investment in BESS here in the UK and battery storage is leading the pack. Many large scale projects are moving ahead, to ensure LDES plays a key role in ensuring clean power by 2030. #NetZero #CleanPower2030 #BESS #EnergyStorage #Decarbonisation https://lnkd.in/eCjp9aTY

Elevate Renewables, owned by private equity funds managed by ArcLight Capital, has proposed replacing an oil-fired generator in Middletown, Connecticut, with a 200-MW battery. Like Granite Shore Power, Elevate is looking to use existing infrastructure to bring clean energy online. “That is particularly valuable in a region where permitting and interconnection are two of the biggest barriers to clean energy development,” stated Eric Cherniss, Head of Development at Elevate Renewables. “Let’s use what we have now to the greatest extent possible and have the highest impact in the short term." New England’s last coal plant is closing. What comes next? https://lnkd.in/g2EABgqJ #BESS #cleanenergy #renewableenergy #Politico #Middletown #decarbonization #ElevateRenewables
