Incredible display of the exponential growth in #datacenter compute and the correlated surge in power demand by Bloomberg "The almost overnight surge in electricity demand from data centers is now outstripping the available power supply in many parts of the world, according to interviews with data center operators, energy providers and tech executives." The arms race to acquire more land and power is underway, but many data center #operators have so much more compute to unlock at their existing facilities. Data centers built for training AI models require even more. Microsoft, for example, strung together tens of thousands of Nvidia processors inside a facility used to develop OpenAI’s technology. These are fed by networking and other types of chips which, combined with machinery in data centers used to prevent the gear from overheating, saps up even more power. The biggest cloud services providers, Microsoft Corp. and Alphabet Inc.’s Google, have announced goals to run their data centers entirely on green energy. All three say they are working on technological methods to use less power or balance the demand on the grid more efficiently. That can include wringing more efficiency from chips and servers, laying out equipment in ways that require less cooling and shifting loads to different areas based on where energy — particularly green energy — is available. Texas offers plentiful solar power and, in the state’s panhandle, some of the best access to wind power in the world, Hollis said. But a hotter climate and strained water supplies are pushing Microsoft and Google to try weaning their data center cooling gear off water. Alternate approaches, however, require more energy — about 5% more on average, according to Microsoft. #datacenter #energymarket #electricitydemand #ai #aiimplication #investmentstrategy #businessstrategy #supplychainplanning

AI Needs Power: What's the Plan? The surge in AI has many thinking about chips and code, but the real crunch might just be electricity supply. It’s the power-hungry data centers, essential for AI's growth, that are now causing a significant strain on our global grids. AI's potential is boundless, but its growth should be at what cost . Thanks to AI, the electrical grid — in many places already near its capacity or prone to stability challenges — is experiencing more pressure than before. There is also a substantial lag between computing growth and grid growth. Data centers take one to two years to build, while adding new power to the grid requires over four years. As a recent report from the Electric Power Research Institute lays out, just 15 states contain 80% of the data centers in the U.S. Some states — such as Virginia, home to Data Center Alley — astonishingly have over 25% of their electricity consumed by data centers. https://lnkd.in/eQEBkiVk

Electricity supply is the latest bottleneck to threaten the growth of artificial intelligence, according to tech industry leaders. As power-hungry data centers add to the strain on grids globally, Amazon, Microsoft and Google parent Alphabet are investing billions of dollars in computing infrastructure to build out their AI capabilities. However, the most popular places for building these facilities are already facing capacity constraints, driving a search for suitable sites in growing data center markets worldwide. With demand for data centers at an all-time high, it's predicted that we won't have enough capacity available by 2030. To support generative AI, which is power-intensive and involves the processing of enormous volumes of information, $1tn worth of data centers will need to be built in the next several years, according to Nvidia's CEO, Jensen Huang. Such growth would require huge amounts of electricity, even if systems become more efficient. The electricity consumed by data centers globally will more than double by 2026 to more than 1,000 terawatt hours, equivalent to what Japan consumes annually, warns the International Energy Agency. Concerns about electricity consumption have driven interest among data center developers in options such as onsite power generation and nuclear energy, with Microsoft hiring a director of “nuclear development acceleration” this year.
