Excited to welcome Kayla Demong presenting "Creating Safe Spaces to Revitalize Your Community" at the #PAS2024 Conference next week in Regina! Kayla Demong, who grew up in Saskatoon, has dedicated 12 years to Prairie Harm Reduction, currently serving as the Executive Director. She also trains organizations across Canada on how to support people who use substances. Kayla is a recipient of the YWCA Women of Distinction Award and the Queen Elizabeth Platinum Jubilee Medal. With 17 years of experience supporting individuals in Saskatoon’s core areas, Kayla’s commitment to this field is deeply personal. Her journey began with her own battle with addition, and this December, she will celebrate 21 years of recovery. These experiences have fueled her passion for harm reduction and her mission to provide better support for substance users, including youth, adults, and families. Objectives include: 👍Define the concept of a safe space within a community pharmacy with an emphasis on its importance in improving health equity and patient well-being. 👍Recognize the role of pharmacists and pharmacy technicians as advocates for inclusivity from a patient’s perspective. 👍Appraise the current environment of a community pharmacy for opportunities to create safe spaces (including physical environment, staff competencies, and cultural safety). 👍Develop a personalized action plan for creating safe spaces within your pharmacy (e.g. self-learning, staff training, signage, community outreach, etc.) #SKpharmacists #continuingeducation #pharmacyconference #pharmacistsareimportant #pharmacistshelp #pharmacyishealthcare #PAS

🎉Celebrating 2 Years of Impact!🎉 The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services, it's Network Leads, and Community Based Organizations across North Carolina are marking a significant milestone - two years of the Healthy Opportunities Pilots in North Carolina. This program has been a game-changer, providing essential services such as food, housing, and transportation to those in need. The results show a reduction in medical costs by about $85 per beneficiary each month, fewer emergency visits, and decreases in food insecurity and housing instability. With over 288,000 services delivered and more than 20,000 beneficiaries enrolled, plans are underway to expand this life-saving program statewide. Further, the findings showed that the longer a person was enrolled in the pilots the greater reduction of risk and cost savings. As CEO and President Karl Hofmann rightly puts it, “The world is sending us so many reasons to divide, but we achieve more when we work together”. If we must achieve #UniversalHealthCoverage and make it easier for all people to lead healthier lives, then working together to achieve quality #consumer-powered healthcare must be the focus. We must rethink partnerships to close gaps, recover momentum, and continue to make progress toward health for all. The Population Services International and Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation partnership to launch the HealthX Partners is one strategic direction to shape the future of healthcare delivery to those who need it most. Together, let's accelerate progress.

The NHS Confederation, in partnership with Newton, the University of Stirling and the University of Southampton, undertook a project to explore what role ICSs can play in ‘unlocking’ the prevention agenda by overcoming persistent barriers to prevention and to uncover best practice that exists across the country. This has informed a new report launched this week, including a series of examples of existing best practice. Its key recommendations are: 1. The government should accelerate work on a national framework for measuring prevention spending. 2. The government should ensure the scope of the recently announced health mission chaired by the Prime Minister is truly cross-government. 3. The government and NHS England should create incentives for work on prevention. 4. NHS England should support the data, digital and technology workforce. 5. Promote a culture of learning and best practice by supporting and funding peer processes, which focus on both short- and longer-term issues including prevention. Congratulations to report authors Annie Bliss, Hashum Mahmood, John Boswell, Paul Cairney and Josh Raine. Read the full report 👇👇👇

Celebrating National Public Health Week: A Preventive Medicine Perspective As we step into National Public Health Week, I am reminded of the incredible journey we are on as a community dedicated to health and well-being. As a preventive medicine physician, I am particularly excited to celebrate the strides we are making in understanding and promoting preventive health measures. Preventive medicine is at the heart of public health. It is about being proactive rather than reactive. It is about understanding the nuances of disease prevention, health promotion, and the broad impact of environmental factors on our health. This week, we celebrate the tireless efforts of public health professionals who dedicate their lives to preventing disease, prolonging life, and promoting health through organized efforts and informed choices of society, organizations, public and private communities, and individuals. Here are a few thoughts I'd love to share with my network on this important week: Prevention is Power: Emphasizing preventive health measures can significantly reduce the burden of chronic diseases and mitigate future healthcare challenges. Let's continue to advocate for regular health screenings, vaccinations, healthy lifestyle choices, and other preventive measures that can save lives. Collaboration is Key: The interplay between various healthcare disciplines is crucial for effective preventive medicine. It requires a collaborative approach, integrating expertise from various health professionals to create a holistic and impactful public health strategy. Education and Empowerment: Informing and empowering individuals and communities to take charge of their health is fundamental. Let's use this week to spread awareness about the importance of preventive health and encourage people to actively participate in their health journey. *****Innovation and Research: Advancements in medical research and technology are pivotal in enhancing our preventive measures. Let's celebrate the innovations that have brought us forward and support continued research in preventive medicine. As we observe National Public Health Week, let's recommit to a future where preventive health is a priority for all, reducing the global burden of disease and improving quality of life. I encourage my peers, colleagues, and friends to join in this observance, sharing knowledge, experiences, and insights that can propel us toward a healthier tomorrow. #PublicHealthWeek #PreventiveMedicine #HealthForAll #CommunityHealth #ACPM #PublicHealth #UNC

Did you catch the WKYC news segment featuring a community health worker (CHW), Fonda McLaine, and her client, Nadine Head, discussing "Addressing Cardiometabolic Health Inequities by Early Prevention in the Great Lakes Region" (ACHIEVE GreatER)? This research project, funded by the National Institutes of Health, is a multi-stakeholder partnership among Better Health Partnership, Case Western Reserve University, University Hospitals, Wayne State University and the Cuyahoga Metropolitan Housing Authority (CMHA), operating in both Cleveland and Detroit. The goal of ACHIEVE GreatER is to reduce cardiovascular complications and hospitalizations for Black patients living in public housing, and who are at risk of heart disease, by improving blood pressure, lipid, and glucose targets. The project, which seeks to determine the impact grassroots efforts can have to address cardiovascular health disparities, pays for community health workers, nurses and care coordinators to work with clients living in CMHA units and coordinate their care with clinical providers and other community resources. Better Health Partnership (BHP) is partnering with University Hospitals to offer a sustainable model for funding CHWs beyond the 5-year grant cycle via the Better Health Pathways HUB. 🌍 Our Job is Not Done 💪 Just as we privately celebrate milestones like birthdays every year, professionally, we gather annually at the EASD meeting. This year, it has taken place in the stunning city of Madrid, Spain! 🇪🇸✨ Thousands of dedicated professionals, all united in the fight against the beast called diabetes, flocked to the city. Instead of visiting the Royal Palace, strolling down Gran Via, or marveling at the art in The Prado Museum 🎨, we sat together, focused on something bigger: 📊 Listening to the latest study results 💡 Exploring new ideas and next steps 🎉 Celebrating the achievements along the way Thousands of brilliant minds gathered – still just a fraction of those battling diabetes globally – but one thing is clear: diabetes is still here. As was powerfully stated in the opening presidential address: "Our job is not done yet." Not until we achieve more.🧠🔬 Together, as a united community of academic researchers, trialists, people living with diabetes, clinicians, allied health professionals, and those of us from the industry, we raise our voices in unison: Our job is not done, but we’ll work on getting it done – together. 🤝🌟 #EASD2024 #NovoNordisk #Diabetes #Collaboration #Innovation #StrongerTogether
