For years, Q30 accuracy has been a standard expectation in sequencing. By definition, it represents a 99.9 percent probability that a particular base call is correct. However, some manufacturers have recently gone beyond Q30 standard and are racing to Q40 and beyond. Q40 is the equivalent of one error in 10,000 bases, an order of magnitude better than Q30.   GeneMind showed data from several internal testing runs of its new ultra high-throughput sequencing platform SURFSeq 5000 that suggested 85-90 percent of bases had quality scores well above Q40. SURFSeq 5000 now can provide users with two Q40 sequencing modes: Balance Mode and Enhanced Mode. In Balanced Mode, SURFSeq 5000 can achieve ≥90% bases ≥Q30 and ≥85% bases ≥Q40. In Enhanced Mode, SURFSeq 5000 can achieve ≥95% bases ≥Q30, ≥90% bases ≥Q40.   The shift to Q40 on the whole represents progress.
